    thrush or blackbird? lymm uk

thanks lowell. the pleasure for me is in observation but it is enhanced by knowledge of behaviour and identification. i wish i had watched these feathered birds more when i was younger as i think i may have even studied them seriously at University. instead i watched birds in mini skirts. if i...

a blackbird dropped a cherry earring on the lawn under the tree, you know, the double stalk that kids hang over their ears, or we did anyway. i didnt think cherries were out yet so someone is feeding them perhaps. it could explain the red beak on the pale bird, cherry skin. not what the bird was...

still cant find anything in ID books or online like that bird. another anomaly. it was just like a very pale robin with darkish tail, no red breast, but with a red bill. first ladybird today, 12 spot. they must be around, i have seen two larvae, but like so much else, becoming rarer than ever...

    Ethical Question

i think ethics are no longer relevant except to individuals working out their own balance. every time you buy clothing you dont really require, pop into the supermarket for packaged food, put down lawn, even go on a forum in some way you are destructively affecting the environment. and that is a...

Tatty Goldcrest - just tired, or ill?

i think the droopy mouth coupled with the bent eyebrow makes it look worse than it hopefully is! almost human expreession of weariness. i wonder why the wing looks so droopy? i have a dunnock the same and thought that was because of the loony wing waving they do at each other but now a...

    Code of Conduct

i know from responses i have had in the past before i took birdwatching more seriously, that if people outside of the 'hobby' discuss it, often the perception is of weird nerdy people that once would have worn anoraks and watched trains ... and if you read wikipedia the conclusion is that...

    Pheasants in the UK

thanks sangahyando and britseye i shall have to go back and check my teenage haunts. plenty of pheasants were breeding in Woburn area, if it isn't all concrete now. i think they built a little town called milton keynes there after i left! and if the Bedfords didnt shoot them all. they did breed...

im not going to ask in the forum because i felt no-one believed in ny arctic redpoll! just a few minutes ago a small robin sized bird landed on the branch above the feeder. 8 metres distance. it was facing away, brown unpatterned back. pale belly, dark legs. couldnt see head but thought it was...

no worries. the site with the copy is a russian scholars site with many hundreds of books, zoological, paleantology, aves and more if anyone is interested - and copyright may be suspect so i didn't post it here as i am not sure of legality. they are black and white .pdf which limits the usability.

i like 'scruff'. he has lost most of his tail feathers and his missus has lost all of hers. he did fight the magpie too. today he stood guard while missus had a ten minute bathe. then two of the babes called by for a visit before all flying off. good family stuff and i don't want to know if...

    thrush or blackbird? lymm uk

thank you! that is 4 young blackbirds this year so they are doing well. i have seen both parents with her now as well. mind you, this one is currently sitting in the tree being fed catfood pellets and white bread from somewhere nearby but i saw mum get a slug so it is not all junkfood.

turns out the 'check out the house' blackbird is dad to a very rusty coloured fledgling. i have been watching him and mum feed the youngster every few minutes in the nearest tree, including unfortunately some white bread and cat food pellets from somewhere. this 'dad' has also knocked 'scruff'...
