Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

Thanks for that information Gareth - really useful. Yes, I knew the cafe closes at 4pm so I was planning on bringing an extra rucksack full of crisps. They are happy to make you a boxed meal for the evening too apparently. I wasn't aware there was a curfew though...one online guide to birding...

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

Thanks for the information albatross02. Sorry - yes, you can camp on Surin. I was referring to Sri Phang-Nga where you have to bring your own tent.

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

I dont think Sri Phang-nga rent out tents like other National Parks. There are campgrounds so, if I get desperate I may just buy a cheap tent (if I can find one) and take that with me. It may get hot in there though! At least I wont need a sleeping bag.

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

Thanks for the info. You're just rubbing it in now! - you get to live in Thailand AND you don't have all the hassle of the DNP website. You're a lucky fella! I'm sort of confident that the bungalows wont be booked up. The reservation calendar on the website seems reliable and empty. I'll look...

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

Hi Ben. How did you go about paying to book a bungalow? I've managed to reserve the nights I want to stay - but can't get past the last stage of the process. I enjoy a challenge but this doing my nut in! It seems there are two options. You either pay in person at a National Park office or via...

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

Thanks for the information Ben. Yes, I heard that the staff are helpful - my friends who have travelled in Thailand before said that the Thai people are a friendly bunch. Did you have to book the bungalows before you arrived or did you just turn up and pay? I'd like to book before I get there...

Sri Phang Nga & Surin Islands: any tips?

I'm just getting ready for a short trip to Southern Thailand. There's going to be some sightseeing and snorkelling involved but I'm also going to sneak off for a few days for some birdwatching on the Surin Islands and Sri Phang Nga National Park. To make sure I get the most from my trip I've...

You still added it to your list though, right?

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

So I think we have cracked it! We are heading to Thailand and straight up to Mu Koh Surin national park http://www.phuketbirdwatching.com/locations/phang-nga-birdwatching-sites/mu-koh-surin-national-park/ ...for some snorkelling and Nicobar Piegeon / Beach Thick Knee action. Then my friend...

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

Thanks - Seychelles sounds good for a future trip but, as you say, the rainy season would be a problem.

Thanks for these suggestions and comments Andy and James (always happy to take advice from Chris Morris). Looks like I've got plenty to consider.

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

Yes, we're going to sit down this week and look at diving opportunities - and potential liveaboard diving trips - which may narrow down our search. I've marked all the suggestions above on a A3 map so we're hoping to find some matches. The Andaman Islands was also mentioned by another friend -...

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

Thanks for all these suggestions and information. I'm sticking pins in my wall map to try and keep up. Hopefully there will be an option here somewhere although it sounds like it may require a bit more effort - but that's no problem. I guess I was spoiled this September when I was snorkelling...

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

Thanks for that link and information Daniel - much appreciated - it really helps me to narrow down my research. I'll get a cup of Bovril, have a sit down and do some more research. Michael

A wonderfully vague question about birding in Borneo / Thailand / Philippines

Hi folks, there seem to be a lot of people here on birdforum with a lot of knowledge and experience of birding in Asia. I have the opportunity to go to SE Asia for about 10 days in the second half of February 2018. I'm travelling with a friend who wants to spend her time diving while I'm off...

Activity in the Surrey / Sussex area?

Hi Phil, Not sure where you are but Sussex Wildlife Trust run a packed programme of walks (mostly in the week) at locations all across Sussex. They also run wildlife identification courses too - everything from raptors and warblers to flies and slugs! There's details on the 'What's on'...
