    Something from Uganda

A friend sent me some bird photos taken in Uganda over the last few weeks. I've managed to ID them all from the net except this one, because I don't know what kind of bird it is and evrything I've typed into Google so far has drawn a blank. Needless to say I have no relevant field guide. Please...

    Recommendations for hand-held?

I use a Nikon ED82 scope with a 25-75x zoom. I know this eyepiece is far from optimal for digiscoping purposes, but all I require is to hold a camera against the eyepiece for record shots. I do not (and do not wish to) use an adaptor. Until it recently died, this task was performed admirably by...

    Nancy's Logbooks

Spurious link to rare birds perhaps, but never mind... Does anyone know the ultimate resting place(s) of the Nancy's Café logbooks? Full of the scribblings and sketches of birding's glitterati. I was just thinking how crucial that they wind up in a museum to be enjoyed by future generations of...

    Gull - Seaton, Devon

It's no coincidence that most of the threads I've started on this sub-forum have featured gulls - I see lots of them, I like them, and sometimes they are less than straightforward. Here's an interesting example. Photographed this afternoon. I have an opinion already, and so do others. We don't...

    Dark-mantled Gull, Devon, UK

Is this just a very pale graellsii LBB Gull? Or something less clear-cut? Mantle shade was about half way between argenteus Herring and standard graellsii (out of shot to the left), and far paler than 100 or so LBBs on the Axe estuary today (a few of which were probably black enough for...

    Caspian-ish Candidate - Devon, UK

This gull photographed late this afternoon on the Axe estuary in E Devon. My feeling is that it doesn't quite make it as a Caspian Gull, but I'd be much obliged if those of you with a bit of experience with this species would kindly give your opinions - pros and cons, and whatnot. I didn't see...

    Dark Falcon, Devon,UK

Greetings all. Here's an interesting one (perhaps |=)|).... Follow this link, and it should take you to a single post from the 'Backwater Birding' thread. The description is scanty, and the photo is very poor, but I would be interested see what options the evidence might suggest to you. Not...

    Interesting Stonechat? Devon, UK

Sorry there isn't a nice photo or two to go with this, but hopefully a description will do. Early this afternoon I came across a very striking male Stonechat at Beer Head, on the SE Devon coast. It was singing, and performing to a female. I did go back late afternoon with scope and camera. No...

    Favourite Bird Info Websites

As a pretty keen local patch type birder I am always interested in knowing what's about. Up-to-date news from sites/areas not too far away from Seaton, in East Devon, where I spend almost all of my birding time, is especially welcome. For example, the knowledge that 6 Cattle Egrets have recently...

    Caspian Gull?? Devon, UK

Perhaps some of you with experience of Caspian Gull might like to offer an opinion on this 2nd-winter type beastie? On the Axe Estuary in E Devon late this afternoon. Sorry about naff photo quality... Perhaps you would care to suggest what looks good and, if anything, what doesn't? Cheers.....Gav

    Grasshopper ID anyone?? Devon, UK

This grasshopper flew in to our garden the other day, foolishly landing in the pond. Rescued and dried off, it appeared none the worse for a dunking. As it is the first grasshopper I have seen in the garden I would like to know if it can be specifically identified. Can anyone help please?

Fuji F30 - simple adaptor for simple digiscoper

Finally decided to try and get to grips with digiscoping, having owned a Fuji F30 for several months. I have a Nikon ED82A scope with a 25-75X zoom eyepiece, and was making do with simply holding the camera to the eyepiece. I was getting some reasonable results, but finding it very frustrating...

    Caspian Gull? Devon, UK

Hello gull buffs. This beastie was found on the Axe estuary in Devon this afternoon. One or two of us reckon it could well be our first local Caspian Gull, and possibly Devon's 2nd or so. None of the observers of this bird (I believe) have ever seen Caspian in the flesh before (I certainly...

What is this, and how do you avoid it?

I am a digiscoping beginner, so apologies if this Q is a bit elementary. In the attached 2 photos (Fuji F30 hand held to Nikon ED82A with 25-75X zoom) the white areas appear to 'bleed' into surrounding areas. Can anyone tell me why htis is happening, and how I can avoid/minimise it?? Thanks.

    Who are the Masses??

A comment by Colin Key on the TWITCHER or BIRD WATCHER thread prompted me to start this. He mentioned a couple of expressions that get his hackles up whenever he hears them, which reminded me of one that pokes me in the eye every time, like it's printed in bold red capitals and accompanied by a...

    Anything About?

How do you respond when this Q comes your way? And I don't just mean 'what do say in reply?', but 'how does it make you feel?'!! I lifted the following off a thread in the 'Tips for New Birders' forum (hope that's allowed): 'I don't know why you want to find people when you are birdwatching...

    Nikon 8x30 EII

Just bought my wife a pair of these bins, to replace some ancient and very tired Optolyth Alpin 8x30s. They are absolutely SUPERB!!! They give my Zeiss 10x40 BGAs a run for their money!

    Wireless Broadband - How Safe??

Bit of advice would be appreciated. My pc is currently plugged into telephone socket downstairs. In the near future I am probably moving the computer to an unused bedroom upstairs (no phone socket). To save running a cable I'd like to consider going wireless, but have heard all kinds of...

    Firefox Glitches??

I use Firefox and just recently (in the last week or so) I've noticed that there are certain things I can no longer do in Birdforum, eg., use the 'bold', 'italic' and 'underline' buttons when posting replies (if I click on them I am simply taken to the top of the web page); also if I click on...

    tristis, abietinus or "forget it"?

Last winter I was the happy co-finder of a pale-as-you-like Chiff which we cheerfully claimed as a sibe, ie., tristis. At lunchtime today I found one which, while pale, greyish and not olive-toned, was not quite as striking as last winter's bird....abietinus? I didn't hear it call, by the way...

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Have been thinking about doing this for a while (lots of inspiration in some of these patch/blog threads), so here we go............... I've lived in Seaton for 3 years now and, while it's not Dawlish or Prawle, it's very not bad - loads of potential and underwatched (yummy). Last year I had a...

    Greetings from East Devon

"A change is as good as a rest", they say, and that seems to be true for me. Since moving to East Devon getting on for 2 years ago the change of scenery seems to have re-juiced the birding glands a bit. Just my cup of tea too - a couple of spots which appear to be virtually unwatched, low birder...
