Alaska - flies and other nuisance insects

I saw a local update on the Denali Highway road conditions posted on-line so I thought I'd share it here. Man, that's a lot of snow!

    Wagtail Poland

I'll post a chart I just found on-line showing the wide range of sub-species for White Wagtails. It's a good idea these days to keep track of the sub-species with all the recent DNA based splits being accepted these days.

    Sticky Focus Wheels

I’m not sure if the following is pertinent, but my 20 year old 8x32 ELs developed a (to me) less than acceptably rough focus knob. Instead of sending them in for repair, I squirted WD-40 behind the plastic/rubber focus knob and turned it back and forwards a few times. The improvement in...

    California, 2024

I just wanted to post a short thank you for taking the time to detail your 2024 California birding effort. I am thoroughly enjoying your impressive march toward 400! I won't clog up your posts with a bunch of complimentary interruptions, but rest assured I (and certainly a good number of...

    Stories Behind Birds You've Photographed

This picture and story are copied from my gallery. The photo of an Albert's Lyrebird was taken a few years before my wife got me into birdwatching and before I discovered this cool website. I took this picture on my honeymoon in 2002 using an old film camera. My wife and I had just started a...

Spring Migration of raptors - Mexico

If you Google “Gunsight Mountain Hawkwatch” you’ll see that Alaska gets a well-attended influx of raptors through a series of mountain passes that funnel the birds to an easy viewing location along the road system. I’ve attended in past years, you can get most of your yearly raptor tics in a...

    Name a Bird You've Photographed

If no one objects, I might be able to play a gray-headed, hooked-billed raptor: New Caledonia Goshawk for #2409

Repair Process for my old Dialyt 8x30B

Postscript: The family reunion was a resounding success. I took a photograph of my father-in-law along with the old 8x30s and his replacement Zeiss binoculars. It’s pretty impressive that two binoculars can last a man an entire lifetime (well, 60 or 70 years of birding anyway). One of my kids...

How could I have missed that?!? Sorry, 2404 is still up for grabs.

    Name a Bird You've Photographed

I get to play! #2404, Iraqi Babbler, seen in Iraq in 2005 or 2006.

    572. Here’s a photo I took in 2009 on Tarawa Atoll. It’s a Pacific Imperial-pigeon (Ducula pacifica).

Alaska - flies and other nuisance insects

You sound well-prepared for the trip - the travel rod is a great idea, though it might be a bit early when you are on the Denali for the best fishing. I'll post two pictures that have little to do with birding except I had a pair of 8x20s on while fishing with the family on Tangle River, near...

Alaska - flies and other nuisance insects

Good luck on your trip! I know the Denali Highway has opened as early as late April during some years, but May is more likely, and this year will be hard to predict. We've had a little more snow than last year, so if we don't get much more the opening should be around the same time as last...

Alaska - flies and other nuisance insects

This has been (and continues to be) a heavy snow year in Alaska, so some of my comments may be a bit delayed - things will take a lot longer to melt out this Spring. Normally in/around Anchorage we get the first big mosquito hatches in June. Once they die off as things dry out, the big black...

Id Help - Nimbokrang, West Papua - 18

Besides female BOPs, also consider some of the larger plain brown honeyeaters. I tried to crop and blow up birds 6 & 7 and it looks like a thin down-curved bill on a mostly brown bird. Sorry I can't be more help. It's difficult with just the pictures - do you have any observation notes?

Random Ramblings on the CL 7x21 Curio

Thanks for all of the commentary – I know thread topics like this one helped me narrow down options when I was in the market; hopefully this thread will be of some value to future purchasers. Thotmosis, that was very generous of you gifting your Leicas to a friend, well done. As you consider a...

Random Ramblings on the CL 7x21 Curio

As I’ve owned my Curios for a year now, I’ll post an update to this long, rambling thread. Bottom line up front: They are excellent compact binoculars and I couldn’t be happier. They replaced my formerly long-used Leica Ultravid 8x20s which were stolen. The replacement options in my mind were...

Comment by 'Joe H' in media 'IMG_8361.jpeg'

It's a mystery. My best guess would be a White Ibis with some color abnormalities. The red is a close match to the red found under the wings. I've never seen one with red and black tips. They do tend to be seen on golf courses, and pretty much everywhere. Welcome to the forum!

Congratulations on your remarkable recovery! That was a very pleasant and inspirational post and I enjoyed it and the great photography immensely. Thank you for posting it! Joe

Alaska - Cordova (Copper River Delta) + Kachemak or if just one, which?

Between the two, I believe Cordova gets a larger number of birds but Homer gets a larger number of species on average. The Kachemak Shore Bird Festival (located in Homer) is on Alaska’s road system, about a five hour drive south of Anchorage. Cordova requires a flight. I’ve never been to Cordova...

Obituary for my Ultravid 8x20 BR, 2006-2022

No doubt a fine optic, but I have never got along with pinkie focus binoculars. It's not that there is anything wrong with pinkie focus, I just can't get used to the process.

    Alaska/Canada Area

I agree with Indobirder regarding the kittiwake and geese. Based on the strong white wingbar and mostly white ubderparts, I'd recommended you look at Sanderling, Rock Sandpiper or possibly Dunlin to sort out the shore birds, though you'd think there might be even one dark belly if they were...
