    Docter (ex-Zeiss) Classic porros

Thank you for the tip! The irony is that it actually really still looks like new (I think it must have been from a NOS). :) But maybe I should indeed send it in a package to Wim De Boer, including also another old small binocular I wanted to send for some time. I heard only praise about his skills.

    Docter (ex-Zeiss) Classic porros

Last weekend, I took the Docter 8x30 with me on a walk together with the 8x32 FL. It was not where I most often go, and it was at noon, on a sunny, but very windy day, in open field (not woods). Not very challenging light nor ideal testing conditions… Clearly, and not surprisingly, the FL was...

Einblickverhalten/ease of view FL 7x42 vs FL 8x32

Without wanting to diverge the topic too much, the fact that you have the two 8x SFL's (8x30 ánd 8x40, which interest me) as well as the FL 7x42 (which I have) make me véry curious about your experience comparing them, both regarding view comfort (blackouts etc.) as well as optical quality (CA...

Einblickverhalten/ease of view FL 7x42 vs FL 8x32

I have both an FL 8x32 and an FL 7x42. The 7x42 is clearly the one with the most amazing view: stable, wide view, with incredible transparancy and brightness, especially in low light, but e.g.also in the woods. I can't imagine selling them. Their only negative points is their sweet spot is not...

    Docter (ex-Zeiss) Classic porros

For most users active on this forum probably not, as we spend time using and discussing mostly véry good or top range binoculars (often not because we really need them, though we sincerely enjoy them). But for many other casual birders/nature lovers who would in any case not spend more than...

    Docter (ex-Zeiss) Classic porros

Some further info: To put it into perspective in the 8x30-32 range: they are not up to my FL 8x32 (optically and mechanically), obviously, but I would have been very happy as a teenager to discover nature with those rather than the old Tasco's that I borrowed back then. I compared them with the...

    Docter (ex-Zeiss) Classic porros

I have a Docter classic 8x30 porro and quite like them. They don't have a neutral colour rendering (rather a bit yellowish, but much less than expected from reading about old bins). They are sharp, and also much brighter than I expected. The fact that there is a sticker on the box mentioning...

    New APC 50 Stabilised

That makes the 18x50 the most interesting one to me. (Just like the 16x42 appeals more to me than the 12x42.) Considering the increased weight, I'm wondering if I wouldn't have preferred an optically upgraded 16x42 (ED, baffling). Still, the 18x50 is way more portable than a 50mm scope with a...

Older alpha vs newer mid-range scopes

The answer to your last question is related to what you said just above it: I'm thinking of "rationalising" my optics a bit, possibly selling some (to keep fewer, possibly e.g. selling 2 to fund 1 I would use more often). Just as I use my larger scope less often than my 50mm (though supposedly...

Older alpha vs newer mid-range scopes

Thanks for sharing! Is the SDLv3 showing more CA at all magnifications, also at (approximately) the same 23x?

Older alpha vs newer mid-range scopes

I just remembered your post while coming back from a cycle-&-walk tour today. I had my 8x32FL, 8x25pocket and 50mm MM4 with me, and the only one that did give me visible CA was the 8x25 (sometimes annoying me). I was actually again impressed by the lack of CA in both my FL binoculars and my...

STC Spotting Scope Monopod Experiences and Recommendations

Does a compact straight scope work well with a monopod? It would require a monopod that is very tall. (Though I can imagine it being great when seated somewhere.) I've never used a monopod with a scope, and thought that most were using it with an angled one. Very curious to read about hands on...

Older alpha vs newer mid-range scopes

Interesting. I fully agree on some midrange scopes being impressive now. More than just satisfying. Funny thing is, I was thinking a.o. of Kite and my Opticron MM4 50. The latter has become the one I use the most: just a great combination of optical quality, size-&-weight and price, as I'm most...

Poll: will you buy Swarovski AX Visio?

Swarovski has been having a shortage of supply for all or most of their new products over the past years. (Curio, ATC, ...). Thus either their market section has a problem estimating demand, or their production section has a problem producing the volume, or they don't care that much about that...

Poll: will you buy Swarovski AX Visio?

On the one hand part of the features sound interesting to me, but on the other hand I think that I would most likely end up not benefitting much from it after some time. Most of the nature and birdwatching I do is for enjoying watching the animals/birds in their daily habitat and behaviour...

Choosing my first spotting scope, budget around 1000€

I don't know which country our region you live in, but maybe there is also a place (popular nature reserve) or group (nature association) nearby where you could easily meet some fellow birdwatchers who would let you try out what they have in "real life".

Choosing my first spotting scope, budget around 1000€

The 25-50x indeed has a much larger FOV than the 20-60x. It's a good eyepiece, but a.o. with some more distortion than I'm used to. (Not a huge issue. Mainly noticeable when panning, or if the background is some building/straight lines.) You could always 'upgrade' later to the 25-50x from...

Wishes: a new scope like the AX Visio

Just some kind of stabilised version of the ATC/STC would be enough of a scope technology upgrade for me, if it would mean that it would really be useable without tripod, not just according to marketeers. (Though I'm not sure if it would work well enough, and the price would probably be set...

Who is still viewing through Victory HT 42s?

I am very curious about further hands-on, direct comparisons between the 8x42 HT and the 7x42 FL. (Was discussed a little bit before in another thread too.) Opinions seem to differ a bit. Probably a reason for me to try the HT out myself, but the only way to do that seems to be buying it... Not...

Different scope for birds and for stars?

I fully agree on that! AFOV plays an important role in the joy of pointing the scope to the night sky. I just wonder if, money-wise, it wouldn't make more sense to invest in a good second hand MM3/MM4 Opticron spotting scope with 1 or 2 good eyepieces, new or second hand (2 fixed wide-angle...

What would £500 get me? Lightweight scope with 1.25" removable EP wanted.

If you are living in the UK, for around that budget, I would usually recommend a second hand Opticron MM3 or MM4 scope with HDF or SDL eyepiece, but I don't know if you can use some astro eyepiece with them (via some adapter). But they have some good eyepieces (old or new).

    Choosing 8x32 vs 7x42 vs 8x25

Just wondering, as this is for on a boat at sea: are there any recommendations regarding protecting and cleaning the binocular lenses that would make sense to also share, specifically for that context? Both for the OP and for others (including me :-) ) out of interest. (I associate sea with...

Kite APC 16x42 … gimmick, replacement or addition? (my report)

Could stabilization be effective for some kind of hand-held 'draw tube' scope? (Not referring to the fact of the scope being collapsible, but to the way they can be held with 2 hands, though requiring some stabilising support as some have described. E.g. the Meopta TGA, Swarovski CT(S/C)75/80...

    Habicht with sticky rubber

This is one of the strangest "binoculars related" threads that I have read here on birdforum. I know nothing about radiation risks, but if you would fear that radiation within your house could be the cause of damage to your binoculars, I would have other (much higher priority) concerns than for...

Different scope for birds and for stars?

I don't know much about optics for astronomy. Some on this forum know much more about it and will probably help you out. I would say there is mainly 1 huge requirement difference: for astronomy, you only need to be able to focus to a very, very, very far distance :). That should allow to...
