    Latest IOC Diary Updates

Yes, already split by Birdlife/Lynx. Still extant on Panay-Negros, but no recent records from elsewhere in the West Visayas.

Yes. The south Philippine taxa may eventually get split from the nominate too.

    Columbiformes

It is possible I don't fully understand what the trees of figs 3, 4, 5 represent, but it appears to me that arcanus is closest to melanospilus (of all the other Ptilinopus) in the diagrams.

    Columbiformes

Please don't describe a new genus until the stats have been put under a microscope. The specimen has a lot of similarities with a juvenile Black-naped FD. See here for example ML609413533 - Black-naped Fruit-Dove - Macaulay Library and it does occur very close to this species in figs 3, 4, 5.

    Robins are flycatchers?

Thanks. I only recalled a part of it correctly then :( The Philippine avifauna has yet to fully recover from the lumping bonanza of the 20th century.

    Robins are flycatchers?

IIRC (I don't have the book with me just now) Delacour and Mayr lumped goodfellowi, albigularis and insignis as one species

    Robins are flycatchers?

It is listed as being collected on Panay, so there is a very limited number of confusion species, none at all likely.

    Robins are flycatchers?

albigularis sounds and acts IMO like a Cyornis

    Subspecies groups and future splits

pygmaeus was described by Alviola from Busuanga in the Calamianes/Calamian islands, so I think that would be the Calamian Frogmouth. However, I don't know of any authorities that recognise this taxon. If anyone has any information to suggest it is valid I would be interested to hear.

    Subspecies groups and future splits

It is treated in the Lynx guide as resident in Mindoro, the East Visayas and Mindanao in the Philippines. But there are no known morphological differences needed to split it. There are also no breeding records, but then cuckoo host species in the country in general remain very poorly documented.

    Robins are flycatchers?

It is no surprise for anyone involved with Philippine birds that goodfellowi is not closely related to its 'conspecifics' (Delacour and Mayr). It is overly surprising, though, that Heinrichia and Leonardina should be in the same genus as Vauriella, though I wouldn't argue with them being their...

    Shortwings - Brachypteryx

OK I didn't realise IOC excluded undescribed. Clements does not have this or the cuckoo-dove as 'subspecies groups' though, which would be uncontroversial.

    Macropygia cuckoo doves

OK, yes, it seems it is in the checklists, but was never mentioned in the update pages: 'The Clements Checklist 2016 updates & corrections provides details (including references) for all species splits and lumps, new species descriptions, revisions to subspecies groups (ISSFs) or subspecies, and...

    Shortwings - Brachypteryx

Yes, and the Philippine poliogyna group remained within the insular SE Asian White-browed SW in 2019, and remains so, while the undescribed Mindanao taxon is given species status. This taxon does not even get a mention in IOC. Given that the lists are supposed to be converging, should this not...

The ebird checklist for Mindanao, Philippines, now includes Mindanao Shortwing (undescribed form) Brachypteryx (undescribed submontane Mindanao form).
