UK, Horsell Common, Surrey bird call identification

Just had a listen, pretty sure it's not Bullfinches. I think Smiths could well be right with the clicking sounds indicating Jay, plus the strength/volume of the "hΓΌ" calls.

    First birdsong!

Singing Willow Warbler in my concrete back yard yesterday was nice. Starlings been singing cheerily for a good while now - however, new for me was one imitating a Chough! (I get real Choughs calling from the house from time to time). Lovely to encounter 4 different pairs of Long Tailed Tits nest...

    Woodpecker song treatment by eBird

Point noted about breeding bird surveys and the requirement to record vocalisations for breeding evidence. Easy for, say, Wood Warbler, but I suppose technically drumming is then the equivalent - as I don't hear Peckers drumming outside the breeding season. As an aside, I've heard wintering...

    Woodpecker song treatment by eBird

Yes I had a similar thought. The LSW on your link 01101001, I'd prob call it one of the contact calls which is analogous to a song, ie it's used in the breeding season to advertise territory etc etc. Though iirc, one of the books says this call can be given year-round (but so can a Robins...

Questions about House Sparrows in UK

That's great! πŸ™‚πŸ‘πŸ¦ I think bushes/shrubs are vital to birds in built-up areas, Sparrows really need them for secure safe places to hang out in. Essential of course for nesting. Important sources of food - berries, and caterpillars (and flowers for insect food). πŸ™‚πŸ¦

Questions about House Sparrows in UK

Interesting stuff. In the suburban areas where I grew up, almost all houses have converted their front gardens to paved parking, (or maintenance-free gravel/astroturf etc), it's very striking. Plus most houses have had extensions squeezed up to their boundaries, and larger areas of open...

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

That's useful info, cheers. Last time I was there a good few years ago, there was not just Dayet Srij, but also a nice lake at the edge of the dunes just near Cafe Yasmina. Do you know just how extensive the lack of rainfall is? Eg Draa Valley, Aousserd, reservoirs?.. At least one (Barrage...

at last the shell guide british birds

I started out with the Heinzel, Fitter, Parslow as a young lad early 80s, loved it, it had all these amazing birds from amazing places. The distribution maps were fascinating - Demoiselle Crane in Morocco, Striped Crake dispersing to Tunisia πŸ€” etc etc! The Shell when it arrived was great, and...

    First birdsong!

First singing Treecreeper in Endcliffe Parks, Sheffield (last Monday). Wonder if this somewhat cooler spell will put the dampener on breeding behaviour.. that said, had a pair of Robins clearly paired up today. πŸ€©πŸ€”πŸ¦πŸ¦
