    Help with native hedging

Planted over 200 ft of it last year, so it doesn't need 'controlling' yet. I also have an established hedge with the varieties you mention which is just kept to the height required with a hedge-cutter. You could possibly ring your local council to enquire about hedging plants. Ours ran a scheme...

    Tanalised timber ok for nest-boxes?

Nor me. ....... and I've never had a Blue Tit go down with dry rot either -- ;)

    Duck baskets

I had Mallard frequenting the garden pond last year, and a pair have appeared this year in the last few days. I bought a duck basket some time back, but the pond isn't really big enough for an island, and I have no experience on siting, -- heights, position etc. Does anybody have any experience...

    "diamond" shaped boxes

A wall covered in ivy or other creeper, is the absolute ideal, but I have used artificial ivy (plastic) surrounding one I put on a wooden fence, which was occupied on a regular basis. The rose hedge would certainly offer good protection, and I'm going to try a couple of boxes mounted on a stake...

    "diamond" shaped boxes

Not sure whether this will be viewable on here, but if not, I can e.mail to anyone interested. You don't need to make the front(s) as shown, two 'backs' can be made and one of them cut across the diagonal (making two fronts) if required. They just look more natural with the grain running...

    "diamond" shaped boxes

Will do, might be a day or two though.

    "diamond" shaped boxes

I'm not sure what the theory is behind them, but I have been making boxes similar to the commercial ones illustrated for a few years, and they seem inordinately attractive to Robins. I leave a much larger opening though by only filling in the bottom half of the 'diamond' on the front (i.e. a...

Why Do You Put Up Nestboxes?

For all of the reasons already mentioned, plus a couple of others. I like designing my own nestboxes to try to attract specific species, and perhaps more importantly the challenge of the - 'where would I choose to nest if I was a Robin/ Blue Tit etc.' - aspect of siting the boxes. Doesn't...

Another newbie going round in circles

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, it certainly looks as though I am in the right place. Don't get the wrong idea about the garden, it's only 3/4 of an acre. Katy probably takes 3 weeks on horseback to ride round hers ! Keith. (Haven't fathomed your smilies on this forum yet)

Another newbie going round in circles

I'll combine this plea for assistance with my intro if that's O.K. I moved into what will be my 'retirement bungalow' last year (although I haven't managed to retire yet) and have been a fairly keen 'Birder' from the age of about 8. I've been using an SLR with telephoto lenses for bird...
