    Texel

A good day today with very obliging Rustic Bunting below Lighthouse. Lots of common migrants. Also one Osprey to the south and a probable Eurasian Treecreeper this morning (heard only) - is rare here.

    Fox noises

Almost nightly for the last few weeks I am woken by foxes making the most atrocious noises at about 3am. Because it's so dark outside my bedroom I can't see anything. They make sort of squealing, yelping, gurgling noises for about 20 minutes then disappear. Occasionally they come back. What...

    What's this accipiter?

This came to me a few days ago. My first thoughts were Goshawk but I'm not 100% and think it might be hybrid/exotic. Would appreciate comments. The observer says it was distinctly bigger than Sparrowhawk. It would be an extremely unusual record for the area. Genuine records away from the...

Status of Black Kite in Denmark?

I had a Black Kite at Ribe in the south of Jutland on Friday afternoon. Scoped it for several minutes. I can't find much info on the status of this species in Denmark. Does anyone have any data? Fugle.dk is mainly in Danish so not much help there.

    Three? odonata to identify

Not sure if the first one is even a dragonfly. The red one was like a Sympetrum striolatum but abdomen narrower. Not sure about the hawker but it was bigger than Aeshna mixta All photographed in north Holland at the end of September. Thanks A

    Weather for this weekend

I'm off to Gib point for the weekend on Friday, anyone got a reliable weather forecast? I'd heard the winds were sort of going South-easterlyish on Saturday.

    Just another Herring Gull?

Seen in Wadenzee on Friday. Seemed a bit small and bill not quite right, but not sure what else it could be. Obviously notoriously variable, but opinions would be welcome. Thanks A

    Today in Noord Holland

I'm currently in Callantsoog. Had a juv Red-backed Shrike (some nice photos), Marsh Harrier, Water Rail, 260 Shoveler were the highlights. Got off the ferry at Hoek Van Holland this and a female Common Redstart was hopping around a shelter on the train platform! Expected maybe a Black...

    Essex birding question

I'm sailing from Harwich to Holland on Saturday and have loads of time to spare. I'm going by train and wondered what I might see at Wrabness at this time of the year. There appears to be a nature reserve or something there according to the map. Thanks A

    Colour-ringed Avocets

There was a colour-ringed Avocet in Notts today. Apart from contacting the BTO, does anyone know of any schemes, who might be able to get me ringing details? Thanks A

    A bush cricket for ID

This thing popped up in my garden while I was cutting back brambles. I've never seen a Bush Cricket before but I think this is one. It looks like a newly emerged imago. The antennae were at least 3 cm long. I would be greatful for a species ID.

    Wader for ID please

Had an email this morning from an observer stumped by the wader she photod the other day in Notts. It does look a bit odd. At first I thought Knot but not sure if it's big enough and legs look too dark. I'm sure i'd have sussed it in the field but in a photo? Opinions gratefuly accepted to...

    Goose menage a trois

At Attenborough in Notts, a large white farmyard type goose has bred with a Canada Goose. Now if this wasn't weird enough the parents are constantly attended by another Canada Goose. The three go round together all the time and all protect the young. The problem with the story is that...

    Blackcap immitating Nightingale

I Was out birding yesterday in Notts and heard what I was certain was a Nightingale. I kept listening and it appeared to tag a Blackap song on the end. At first I assumed I must be listening to two birds but the Nightingale song kept ending with the typical whistly notes of Blackcap. I...

    Funny duck

This might be a hybrid - a friend of mine snapped it yesterday. Any ideas?

    Skua ID

Saw this last Friday off Cley in Norfolk. The bird looked a lot bigger and barrel chested in life than it does in this photo. The underwing pattern and the fact that with the scope it showed a pale base to the bill led me to conclude it was a Pom. What's the concensus?

    What's this one?

Is this a dark green fritillary

Fritillary sp. Seen on a recent trip to North Wales. I thought it was dark green but now not sure. I think it might be pearl-bordered? They were all rather tatty.

Is this some sort of record?

Hi, I was at Landudno last week and went looking for butterflies round the Happy Valley gardens every day. On Thursday 3rd August it was really sunny and in a small area (quarter of an acre?) including budleia, a rockery, small pond and a patch of soil with some low flowers I had the following...

    Funny buteo in Notts update

This is the one that the observer originally thought might be a Steppe Buzzard and then we thought maybe a Red-tailed Hawk. Here's two more images, not very good ones it has to be said. The bird has been seen mating with a Common Buzzard in the last few days.

Just another small argenteus Herring Gull?

This bird in Northumberland last Thursday looked especially small to me and the head shape was also slightly untypical in my view. I supose it's just an argenteus but anyone care to Comment?

    Possible Steppe Buzzard?

Comments would be appreciated on this bird, which has been seen in Notts recently. This is the best photo available. The observer has added the following note: "The upperwings are a rich rufous colour, it has rufous lesser coverts, and pale median and greater coverts with dark tips. The tail...
