Loch of the Lowes, Perthshire. Ospreys

This live webcam is already up and running as the female returned on 7th March (unusually early) and she is showing well today. I first went to see the nest in 1970 (a year after they appeared), when Ospreys were still fairly uncommon.

Behaviour of Broad-billed Sandpiper with Dunlin

In July 1984 at Malltraeth Cob Pool, Anglesey, Wales I watched a Broad-billed Sandpiper which had been discovered the previous day. The weather was fine and the Sandpiper associated itself with a Dunlin flock on the pool feeding at the edge of the water on a muddy part. The Sandpiper seeemed...

Small Bat in Cults, Aberdeen 17/04 & 19/04/23

Small bat twice this week at Dunmail Avenue, Cults c. 08:45 pm on both occasions. Flight strong, rapid and direct, heading towards the River Dee using the same route each time. It may originate from the building I live in. This isn't my field of expertise (like so many other things), I'm afraid.

    Unusual (?) Osprey display.

A video from 16/04/21 of one of the Ospreys at Urdaibai Bird Center apparently displaying to the other of the pair by a 'trailing legs in the water display'. Not something I've heard of or seen before (though I am not an Osprey expert as such), or is it as the title suggests really just...

    White-rumped Sandpiper

Given the recent occurrence of a flock of 11 birds on the Outer Hebrides (I was excited beyond belief to see 1 in the 70s) what are the odds of this bird having a first breeding for the Western Palaearctic soon (unless it already has and I've missed it). Presumably at least some of these birds...

    The Voice of the Turtle

There has been a small series of records of Turtle Doves in the Western Isles recently. I was just idly wondering if anyone knows where these birds might originate from? I presume from the east of Europe, but am not sure.

    Hovering Night Herons

In May 1991, at Lake Apolyont, Turkey, I saw 4 or 5 Night Herons Nycticorax nycticorax 'hovering', that is: hanging into the (fresh) wind about 25 feet above the surface of the lake, without moving far (a few inches side to side) and without beating their wings. This was carried out for a...

Are we missing female Lesser Kestrels?

From this summary, which includes the Noss bird in May, it appears that the last records of female Lesser Kestrel were in 1897 and 1903 (shot and dead respectively): http://www.rarebirdalert.co.uk/v2/Content/WeeklyRoundup2017-22.aspx?s_id=947090391 That this should be so in a migratory species...
