    Fly identification

Any ideas about the attached photo? The eyes were a more distinct shiny bronze in life. Burton Mere, Cheshire, 29/5, edge of wooded path.

    Jay diet

Anyone else seen a Jay eat a snail? It came down to the patio, hopped over the edge and probed the base of a plant, picked out a decent sized adult Garden Snail, flew about 10m into an Oak tree, and with the snail shell mouth facing upwards, extracted the snail and ate it. Fascinating to see.

    Olive Warbler

As part of my ongoing quest to see all the bird families, I'm now down to the last 40. One of those missing is the Nearctic Olive Warbler - anyone know where/how easy it might be in July or August in the US? Thanks

What could mimic a Fan-tailed Warbler? Wirral

Its either the one that got away, or I'm seriously forgetting something! I was out with a non-birding friend yesterday near Leasowe Lighthouse, North Wirral, and I'd stopped to look at a very showy pair of Stonechats in a damp field next to reeds. I'd passed my binoculars over to my friend, when...

    Bats in Ghana

It's a long shot I know - but anyone got any suggestions as to the possible identity of some insectivorous bats seen last week in Mole? Near a pool, just at and after dusk, appearing quite broad winged, 4 or 5 circling around at a little over head height without making any drastic turns. Also...

    Incomplete families

What is the smallest family that no-one has mopped up? I am guessing Owlet-Nightjars, but would be interested in other suggestions (or if someone has seen them all!)

    Complete families

What is the largest bird family that any member here has seen all the members of? Pathetically, I can, at present offer Divers as my contribution, but 5 is a horribly small number! I am one short of Pelicans (Spot-billed) and one short of Gannets (Abbot's Booby).

Where to see various bird families in the Neotropics

I have recently decided to try to see at least one member of each family (basically the most split lists so nothing ends up being missed!) Having just returned from getting 12 gaps filled in Peru, I am left with some gaps in the Neotropics. Some, such as Magellanic Plover and Seriema are pretty...

    Dead Dunnocks

In the last 10 days or so, I have found two dead dunnocks within about 120 yards of each other. The first was just after the really severe winds, and there was also a dead robin nearby, which I put down to accidents possibly exacerbated by some stress/malnutrition considering the poor run of...

    Small mammal trapping in Finland

Anyone know anything about the legalities ( or indeed practicalities) of using Longworth traps in Finland?
