Tern in Malaysia: Aleutian or something else?

Photographed today in Penang, Malaysia. I'd be grateful for any thoughts on the tern arrowed. I did not see the bird in the field. I was taking photos of the roost from a boat, and only found it while checking the photos on the computer. This is the only sharp photo, though I have a couple of...

    Long-billed stint in Malaysia

The stint on the left of the group of Red-necked Stints was photographed in Penang, Malaysia, yesterday. As soon as I got onto the bird I was struck by the length of the bill. I managed to take 3 photos at 60x through the scope before the flock took flight. They didn't land within view. One of...

    Replacement for Olympus DS-85 DVR

I've had the above-mentioned device for years and have been thoroughly happy with it till it met an undignified end today in the pocket of a pair of trousers I washed! It's still showing no signs of life after an afternoon in the sun. I'll give it some more time to dry out, but, assuming it...

    How to do (birds') feet?

I would have thought this question had been asked on this forum before, but I can't find any thread, so perhaps not. Does anyone else find feet impossible to do well? Mine always end up looking as if they are made from pipecleaners. The way I resolve this is usually to hide them behind a leaf...

    Painting 101 - help needed!

Hi everyone It's been a while, but I'm still here, lurking... Lately I've been feeling inspired to try to put brush to paper again. Although I used to sketch and do pen & inks quite a bit years ago, I've never got to the point where I enjoy painting. For me, painting is the point where I ruin...

    Asian Shorebirds

You're sitting staring out over the mudflats of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A single flock of waders flies past in the heat haze (I'll spare you the actual heat!), and you take 5 frames of the flock as it flies past (Frame 1 is the right hand end, Frame 5, the leftmost. Frames 1 and 2...

    Jungle-flycatcher at 1,350m, Sabah

Sketching in the field - in Afghanistan!

I belatedly just found out that my cousin, Rich Johnson (not the bird illustrator!) is back in Afghanistan for his third term as a war artist with Canadian peace-keepers. You might find his tips on what to pack if you're thinking of doing some field-sketching in Afghanistan interesting, here...

    An interesting Jaeger/Skua, Malaysia

I have more pics of this bird, but, if this was the only view you had, what would you call this, and why? I find jaegers hard, so am interested to learn from others.

    Tablet Season again!

'Tis the season when I get the urge to put digipen to tablet again - occurs once in a blue moon usually. Here are the results this time around - self explanatory really. The full story is on my blog, and more are in the works - males next!

Yes, it is a bird, but what?

Taken in Malaysia but a familiar European bird - that's your only clue! Dave

Malaysian bird - just for fun!

    Any guesses?

    Stuff you should see!

Hi all Not sure if there is still a thread to cover all the 'misc' bits of art done by others, so I'm starting this one. Szabi Kokay is no stranger to regular readers, but I still thought this stunner should be brought to everyone's attention! Outrageously good. Didn't ought to be allowed...

    Moult/Molt and Aging Forum

I'm quite surprised there isn't a forum for this major aspect of study (unless I've missed it). I would be interested to see how much interest there would be in a forum focusing on this particular topic. I'm not a bander/ringer, but am interested in learning from the experts, and especially...

    Interested in moult and aging?

I've just got hold of Steve Howell's amazing book Molt in North American Birds. Having started out brightly, I am getting a little bogged down in his description of the Humphrey-Parkes system and the various molt strategies. I am ploughing on, re-reading and taking notes in an attempt to get...

Status of Bornean Black Magpie Platysmurus aterrimus?

This is now a popular 'field guide split' from Black Magpie P. leucopterus. Does anyone know of any peer-reviewed ref to this split (or argument against the split)? Thanks Dave

    All at sea?

Not sure if this is difficult or easy! Photographed in the Straits of Malacca on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia earlier in March.

Nikon CP8400 stolen - what's the best replacement?

My house was burgled two nights ago and my digiscoping camera, my beloved Nikon CP8400, got stolen, along with my laptop. Fortunately I still have my scope (Kowa 884 with zoom 20-60x eyepiece) tripod and Kowa digiscoping adapter. Since I'm due to be taking part in a wetland survey next week...

    UnBar-tailed Godwits, Sydney, Australia

I came across several adult baueri Bar-tailed Godwits with partially or completely unbarred tails recently. I'm wondering if this is referred to in literature anywhere, and whether it occurs only in this race. More pics on my blog. Cheers Dave

    Mystery tern off Singapore

This tern was photographed off Singapore on a pelagic trip last month. So far, Bridled, White-winged, Common, Aleutian, White-cheeked and Whiskered have been considered, but the general consensus is still "Dunno!" Anyone recognize it? Thanks Dave PS Best viewed under the 'original size' option

Request for recent papers on identification of Red/Black-headed Buntings

Does anyone have a pdf of Shirihai, H. and Gantlett, S. (1993) Identification of female and immature Black-headed Buntings. Birding World 6: 194–197 or any more recent studies on the separation of these two species in non-male breeding plumages? Thanks Dave

    Sri Lanka/Malaysia/Singapore/Thailand seawatching

Just thought it would be good to establish a thread for seawatchers in these parts, so we can share what's about in the area, and give each other some encouragement about what to look out for. Yesterday, off Kedah, West Malaysia, there were: Short-tailed Shearwater 21 sightings (some probably...
