    Birding the lazy way !

Spent some time today setting up a remote camera which I plan to use as a nest box cam next year. The idea came to me after watching the SpringWatch programmes on the beeb. Surprisingly the cam, which is a wireless cam and can be plugged into the back of your PC or any other TV with a 'Video...

    Cliff top view

Drove a few miles north this afternoon on a sunny warm day and walked the clifftops at Killykhan (about 50 miles north of Aberdeen) Spectacular is the only word to describe the views. The sheer height takes your breath away but it doesn't do my vertigo any good, I always have an incredible urge...

DSLR blue hue round lighter colours, help!

I've noticed recently I sometimes get a blue plume round a bird I'm photographing e.g. the little egret I photographed tonight. I'm using a Pentax *ist Ds with a 650 - 1300 telephoto lens, film speed was at 400, speed was down to about 1/60 or 1/90th, all settings were on default for...

    Gulls vicious attack.

I was quite surprised today by the action of a group of gulls who carried out a vicious attack on a guillemot. Initially, one gull was floating beside the guillemot and taking very little notice of it. As the two got nearer and nearer the gull suddenly started to peck at the guillemot who began...

Foggy but good weekend in NE Scotland.

Despite poor foggy weather I managed to get a few firsts notched up this weekend . I don't go anywhere in particular as I like to just to drive around the farm and country roads in the area looking to see what I can find. Apart from the 'normal' birds I managed to capture a pair of barn owls out...

    Albino or rose starling???

This is a new one too me, it flew with the starlings, perched with them and looked like one apart from the colour. Sorry the pics are not better but it was only a fleeting glance and taken on the spur of the moment. Anyone seen anything like this before. Taken today at St. Fergus Scotland in...

    Siskin? ID. please.

Eventually I hope to have the knowledge to confidently identify most birds I see but until then, would someone care to confirm that this one's a siskin female? Hopefully with the amount I'm photographing that might not be too long. Pic taken at Queens View, Loch Tummel Scotland last Sunday...

    Mystery Raptor Scotland

Yeah I know its a long shot but it just didn't look like a common buzzard to me. The pics were all cloned together so its the same bird. Maybe its a little too far away to identify. Anyway thanks for any help all. Pics were taken about a mile south of Glenshee ski slopes.

A brief summary of my birding life, up to now.

I cannot believe that in a few short months I would be mesmerised by birds, I only decided last year, as I'm getting on in years (no I don't feel it) and after hearing that we had Ospreys in the locality, that an upgrade to my camera gear was necessary. So, I bought a big lens to go with the SRL...
