    Longclaw ?

Still processing photos from my trip to South Africa in Feb/March 2014. Here are a couple of photos taken in Umfolozi Reserve, Kwa-Zulu Natal. I have presumed them to be a juvenile Yellow-throated Longclaw but my field guide does not describe or picture a juvenile bird. I would be grateful for...

    Vulture identification

I have just returned to UK after a superb holiday in South Africa travelling from Johannesburg to Durban via Kruger Park, Wakkerstroom and St Lucia. On first glance through my many photos I found some flight vulture pictures taken in the Kruger Park. I wonder if someone would be kind enough to...

    Kwazulu-Natal itinerary

Hi Xav, I think our trip was through KZN wildlife but in any event all the trips were the same as the boats are restricted on where they are allowed to go. I am told there have been changes since I was there in June 2012 and there are now 2 different trips available. Not long to go now ...

    Kwazulu-Natal itinerary

Hi Guys, I am doing a similar trip at the same time, only in reverse and with 3 non-birders who enjoy the wildlife and allow me plenty of birding time. We start in the Graskop area, then 5 days in Kruger, and on to Wakkerstroom then down to St Lucia for 7 days via Ithala. I stayed in St Lucia...

    Cisticolas

I had a wonderful holiday in Kwa-Zulu Natal back in June 2011 and hope to go back again later this year. I found identification of Cisticolas particularly difficult and wonder if someone will be kind enough to confirm the identity of these photos. The first picture was taken in Umfolozi Game...

    Southern Ground-Hornbill

I have recently returned from a most enjoyable trip to South Africa. The principle trip was around Kwa-Zulu Natal and although not a specific birding trip, being with 3 non-birders, I was able to visit some prime sites and recorded over 180 species. The purpose of the request is that we had a...

    Wader ID South Africa

Thanks Guys. I feel a lot better now as they seems a healthy debate, and I thought it might be an simple decision for someone experienced in the area. As ever with waders the bird books only a show a limited range of plumages, clearly this bird should be in winter plumage. The extent of the...

    Wader ID South Africa

I have just returned to UK from a most enjoyable trip to KwaZulu Natal. Being my first trip to the area there were numerous birds that proved a struggle for me to identify. This shot was taken on 25th June on the beach at False Bay, near St Lucia. Can anybody identify this wader for me. Other...

    First visit to South Africa

I am going to South Africa for the first time in February 2010. A short visit, with 4 nights on the southern edge of the Kruger and 4 nights in Cape Town. It is not a birdwatching trip but of course with game drives on the Kruger leg arranged I will get an opportunity. I would be grateful if...

    Gull identification Yucatan Peninsular, Mexico

I have just returned from a very enjoyable holiday in Mexico. I stayed at Riu Lupita, in Playacar and took advantage of a day trip with a local guide, Luis Ku Quinones, but most of the time was spent around the hotel. All in all I saw 130 species and hope to do a trip report shortly. On the...

    Kingbird - Yucatan, Mexico

Here is a challenge for you. I have just returned from my first trip to the west side of the Atlantic staying at Riu Lupita, Playacar,Mexico. Here are a couple of photos of a Kingbird, a new species for me, but I read that the best id feature is voice. Although I saw several Kingbirds they all...

    ID from Yucatan Peninsular

The picture was taken in the evening light, the brown appearance of the picture may well be hiding a more greenish colour. The bird to me seem pretty plain in colour overall apart from a lighter rump. I certainly did see a pair of Summer Tanagers in the near vicinity with the male in its...

    ID from Yucatan Peninsular

I have just returned from a highly enjoyable leisure holiday staying at Riu Lupita in Playacar. I was not a birdwatching holiday but I did managed at least an hour or so most morning around the Playacar golf course which was highly rewarding with over 70 species identified. I can't believe how...

Most Common First Bird of 2008

My first bird will undoubtedly be a Robin singing as I stagger home from the evenings festivities. Good birding to everyone in 2008.

Bird Tour with Jules Sykes in Alicante, Spain

Dave, Great pictures and the report brings back many happy memories of my visits. I suspect your only regret is not having a longer break. John.

Do you remember the thrill of the first time?

Many first birds stick in my mind, or even just exceptional sightings. Here's a couple. However I can still remember the first bird that got me into birdwatching. My father and I were sitting on a beach in Cumbriain the 1960's, while Mum had gone to the shop. There were a group of amazing small...

    Question about Little Owls

I am certainly not a expert on Owls, but I managed by accident to find a pair locally and had some fantastic views lately. As above I always consider them a parkland bird rather than woodland bird, and best time to see them seems to be about an hour before dark, checking posts and tree stumps...

Comment by 'johnmoonie' in media 'Great Crested Grebes'

GCG are generally pretty wary over here and you are unlikely to get close without use of a hide. However they are pretty common and seem to regular nest within camera range of some fixed hides.

    My 1st Kingfisher

Congratulations. Even better getting such good photos. It will certainly remain with you for life. I still remember the thrill of my 1st Kingfisher 40 years ago at Minsmere, or was it the glare from the rest of the birdwatchers in the hide from the noise I made.

ID Help - Snake in Spain

Many thanks for the confirmations. Kevin, No Short-toed Eagles at that time, but saw several on the trip (also a lifer for me), a very impressive eagle.

ID Help - Snake in Spain

I've just returned from a highly enjoyable bird watching trip to the Pyrennes and NE Spain. The group found this snake in the Ebro Delta on a road but, of course, with water and rice fields in abundance. The snake was around 2 feet in length. The group consensus was heading towards Viperine...

    Valencian Short Break

A fantastic few days for you. The bird watching continues to be so good. Having been there myself it still amazes me what can be found so close or even amongst the urbanizations of Spanish coast line. Great to see Jules is going back to Monnegre, that really brings back memories of my first...

A day at the Golf Course

I'm another birdwatcher/golfer and sadly eagles do not come into play in either form. I really have a pretty good list of species on my course and I like to think watching birds between shots is better than thinking about my last bad shot. When I was in Spain on a golfing holiday it was very...
