    Moth Id, Not Smokey Wave??

This hatched and died without me noticing. I thought the caterpillar was Smokey Wave, but on all the Smokey Wave moth pictures I have looked at, this moth appears to have straighter markings, rather than a good "wave" on the wing, and also clearly marked dark fringe which is failing in photos...

The Annual Round up from Austria.

Hello folks As Ken rightly points out there isn't alot of activity with caterpillars at the moment, and I am back in the building. Joy oh bliss that about two months of the year a man can walk upright and look straight ahead along a path to work without fear of inspecting every/ or worse...

Hello Folks Another for confirmation. It should be Common Rustic, but I have absolutely no experience to draw on and say it really is. Can anyone else help? Hatch date was 06.07.2006 Cheers for now Jim

Two Beauties: Confirmation and ID needed!

Hello Folks I don't know if is just my eyes, or the complete inability to see there is no difference in Willow Beauty, but these two that hatched at the same time just don't quite match up to my eyes. Is it just my imagination or how the photo was taken, or is the second one's hind wings...

    Round up of activities 2006

Hello Folks, Despite the contradicting weather pattern out side, the year is approaching an end, and as I haven't had much time this year to submit or contribute, I thought I could maybe bring a summary of my year together so that the reason of 'absence' is apparent! Jan/Feb/March; were major...

Just to post up this years nights, as they are earlier than 2005's. Link with details follows. http://www.lepidoptera.bai.pl/start.php?lang=UK All the best from a land where spring has not arrived yet, and the thought of moths a vague memory! :egghead: Jim

    Micro Id/Confirmations required please!

Hello Folks, I have finally had time to hack into the backlog of Id work, and here are a few which hatched and either require confirmation because of variation, or Id/suggestion because I can't find it. 1. Ypsolopha sequella, the only problem I'm having here is that all other photos looked at...

    Recent hatches; 'Show & Tell'

While I was back slogging my boots off in inclimatic/very climatic Scotland a few weeks past, some of the awaited hatching took place. 5 female Mottled Umber hatched from 4 differently patterned and coloured caterpillars (2 were of the dark form commonly found), and all showed no discernable...

What is Behind a Moths Common name?

Why is the Brick called the Brick? Or why Dark Mottled Willow, which eats only grasses? Are there any old reference books on this subject? There are some names clearly associated with the plants the larva feed on, or the moth in which habitat found in, part of pattern, an entomoligist, or...

Raglitz Moth & Butterfly day 28th May 2005!

I am just going to make the foreword for Andrew, who did a great job at identifying more than a few unknowns to myself at Raglitz on Saturday. He and his wife, myself and family, and a botanist from the centre here Franz Starlinger, who is more than just that too, had a day (and a half it feels)...

    Winter moth caterpillar devastation, Vienna

Last year was bad enough, but this year we had plague proportion of O. Brumata, combined with O.fagata, Orthosia sp., E. defoliaria, and many others which in their own right would not be a burden, but in this year helped tip the balance. Yesterday we went a walk in a park area where I had found...

    Harry; Geo. Stiffs?

Harry, In the last survey I carried out at Raglitz, I came across a Geo. stiff. It was lying above ground, and literally rock hard, no movement. I very gentle tried to bend it, but there was clear resistance, I did not attempt the bend further. Photos of it attached. I left it lying, not...

Harry: Have you any idea what this parasite is?

Hello Harry, have you any idea what fly/wasp did this? Pictures were taken last night. Both were attacked, both are now recovering, and all the offending larva are now cocooned, so will seperate them tonight. Last year I had a similar incident in June I think it was, but that variety killed...

Paddock & Orchard, 3yr Larva & Moth Project. Lower Austria

I mentioned earlier that I was planning to start 4 Caterpillar projects this year. On the past Easter weekend I set two of the four in action. The second of the 4 main projects to start was to be our "Paddock and Orchard", see photos attached. I have set out five 6m long 1m wide strips divided...

Reflected UV, and whitewashed walls? Why?

Can anyone explain to me why the moths are more attracted to whitewashed walls near to a UV lamp than the lamp it's self? I have been a bit ultra Scottish with my pennies and got a double tube UV fly trap, and had our lab tech. to disconnect the zapper part (maybe 'Downstairs' will 'sponser'...

    Moth for Id

Photographed yesterday resting on an alder. It appears to have a Male feathered antenne, rather than a saw tooth Female. I have been looking at Early Grey, but the pattern is a bit off to what I have seen on pictures throughout Europe, so not certain. I also tried Notodontinae Dicranura ulmi...

Show and tell, Female March Moth

This is turning out a good day! I checked the pupae glasses and two of my March moth larvae have hatched, both female. Now there is no doubt about these ones, they are completely wingless, not even stumps. Celebration time for alot of work and 10 months waiting! B (: Jim

    Moths! Caterpillars! Spring at last!!

:bounce: It's finally here with a purpose, Spring has sprung, what a long Winter that felt. The snow is gone, but sharp frosts are still about. Yesterday, two moths; 1 March moth, and another still to identify(probably a Noct.), and three caterpillars of Noct. family (2 species). So far this...

Why there are still no Moths!

This is how I leave Vienna today. -8°C, and a hard covering of snow. This is now 6 weeks of snow lying, in which time about 1m (100cm) of snow has fallen. Maybe Spring will appear like the tooth fairy when I'm gone. Hard to believe the forecast is for +10°C tomorrow. Jim

    Pyraloidea, may be problematic!

As promised, another 'package' of goodies(?) a.to either identify, or b. at least look at. 1. Settled in the grass at my foot, at first I thought I had taken a blurred picture and then I realised the pattern is completely 'washed' together so to say. I have not been able to find anything near...
