RFI: Best week for Colima Warbler at Big Bend NP

It's definitely a reasonably strenuous hike. Coming downhill via the Pinnacles trail is especially hard on ankles, knees and hips because of having to step down. The Laguna Meadows trail is longer but less steep.

Foreign Visitors to Houston/Upper Texas Coast

Thanks Steve!--Due to your suggestion, I just signed up for Birding Pal (again). However, I never got a single birding pal email the last time i signed up for Birding Pal nine years ago. Hopefully this time will be better.

Foreign Visitors to Houston/Upper Texas Coast

Foreign birding visitors to Houston/Upper Texas Coast: Anybody looking for a birding buddy on a weekend morning (Sat, Sun and 50% of Fridays)-I am often available--love to show people around--or you could join me on whatever planned birding outing that is already planned for that day. I am...

    Back country

Out of the Way Texas Yup, I agree with Phil R. above--Some of Big Bend Nat'l park and especially Big Bend Ranch State park can be definitely almost Alaska-level out of the way. The state park requires cars with puncture-resistant (thicker side-walls) tires to access some of it. Near to Big...

    ABA Big Year 2016

I for one am much relieved. I for one am much relieved. Seems like a good idea by John to travel to Arizona for the Lesser Sand-Plover. There is no prize money for setting the record--only "fame"--so if everybody ends up grumbling about your whole Big Year List--based on your questionable...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Whoa-- Were the "Big Year rules" completely disregarded on this one? So seemingly just because he doesn't want to travel--John W reverses his previous decision with no new data nor interpretation--just some encouragement from someone he spoke with. (especially when those apparently near him at...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Hmmm. Another Jabiru. I just missed john w and "olaf" by a couple of hours last month at the Mexican violetear in Medina County, TX. I wonder if they will chase the jabiru despite the distance. I will be chasing it friday morning--only 2 hours from my house. I just missed the last (2008)...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

First Pelagic (4 lifers) and no seasickness! Finally braved seasickness and took my first ever pelagic trip (this one was out of Port Aransas, TX). Luckily the Prescription skin patch eliminated seasickness and I added 4 common Gulf of Mexico pelagic birds as lifers: Cory's Shearwater...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Thanks Joe. I see two birds currently in the ABA in the last 7 days needed by Olaf--3 Buller's Shearwaters from the Santa Cruz, CA municipal wharf July 26 and the White-tailed Tropicbird July 21 on pelagic off Cape Hatteras NC. He will likely get the Buller's soon anyway on a N. California...

See above though for some tips already...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Green Violetear. John W got it in the morning. Olaf got it late morning/early PM. Per Jan M their stays didn't overlap. I drove over and got it next after Olaf in mid-afternoon. Very pretty bird (& lifer for me too). i guess i just missed the ABA Big Year heavy hitters. I assume Olaf will be...

    July in Austin

Best place is Hornsby Bend SE of Austin but still in Travis County Best place is Hornsby Bend SE of Austin but still in Travis County. This link lists all birding hotspots in the area ranked (in lower right corner--maps are provided if you follow the links). You may want to poke around this...

    ABA Big Year 2016

July 5 Totals 745 (ebird) or 744 (his blog) Bradley McDonald (A.K.A. Olaf Danielson)(July 3) 738 John Weigel (July 5) catching up very rapidly. 688 Christian Hagenlocher (July 2) Why do people think Olaf's only at 744 despite ebird=745--looks to me like an acceptable picture of the green...

    Texas info please

No problem--feel free to send a texas target list. One possible interesting species--You could possibly have a small chance of catching the last wild Whooping Cranes before they depart from Aransas Nat. Wildl. Ref. for Canada. Only about 150 wild pairs left in the world and is the tallest crane...

    Texas info please

Hello. I live in Houston (and have seen 500+ species in Texas). Given 15 days you should do both the upper Texas coast (UTC) and the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). No reason to limit yourself to one location or the other. March 29 - April 15 is not hitting the peak of Spring migration which is more...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Thanks for the link. Met Christian at the Common Crane near Brownfield, Texas in March but hadn't ever read his blog until now. Was surprised to see I was in one of his pictures ("An un-Common Crane Part 2"--the tall guy with hat looking through tall scope in back of Justin Bosler's white pickup...

    ABA Big Year 2016

Maybe i spoke too soon. Olaf's bile was really spilling all over Utah in his last blog post. I may be moving towards neutral as far as rooting between the two--wish John W used ebird however. Also trptJoe--really like your Lists of Species separated by Codes. Thank you for your efforts--makes it...

    ABA Big Year 2016

I agree. I gotta figure Olaf's heading for RGV Texas (for Y-G V and Ani). Have enjoyed following Olaf's blog in 2016. he may be cranky but he seems to treat the people he meets along the way well. Glad John W at last has some sort of blog commumnication.

When & Where In Texas for good bird hotspots

If you're coming in Winter I'd definitely go to the RGV. if you're coming in very late april/early May I'd skip the RGV and instead focus on the Upper and or Central Texas Coast area. Corpus Christi is a long way from Sabine Woods/High Island but don't be too scared by the distances. You can get...

    FeatherFest 2007

I went to Featherfest in 2005 Featherfest is alot of fun. It's well run and has good tour leaders. I would particularly recommend anything led by Jim Stevenson. I would recommend the shorebird trips (Bolivar Flats is excellent). One complaint, Featherfest is held too early in April to see most...

Birding on Sunday A.M. or Friday's

Seeking Houston Birders/visitors on Sunday's A.M. or Friday's Hello Bird Forum folks. I live in west Houston and am an avid intermediate level birder. I go birding every sunday morning and now have swirtched positions within my company to a job with every other Friday off. As most local...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Maybe you in the UK (and Europe) should wake up! US CO2 emissions per capita are the highest in the world and the Bush ignores the problem (most US politicians do except Al Gore). However, Kyoto is a joke. The change in US CO2 emmissions since Bush got elected in 2000 is actually BETTER...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Bravo-that's hilarious however, that ceramic conical chimney protusion in the background of your video could never be found in the USA. And the IBWP seemed very stiff and a bit smaller than I was expecting ;)
