    Newbie-friendly birdwatching resources?

BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) has great resources for recording what you have seen and also ID and information pages. For books you can't go wrong with the Collins Bird Guide. A bit more expensive than some books perhaps but as an ID guide it's first rate.

What Bird stuff did you get for Christmas?

I got a camera bird box. I actually received it and set it up in November, but except to check it was working I hadn't switched it on. Then Christmas morning I switched it on and the bottom was covered in bird poo. Theres a Blue Tit roosting in it. Bodes well for the spring.

I've found that the domed baffles work well if sited away from other features that the squirrels can jump from. They hit the dome and just slide off.

Found a very fresh shed snake skin

I found this skin in the garden this morning, it was still soft and slightly sticky when I picked it up. About half an hour later when I took these photos it was starting to harden. Ouch! Worcestershire

I was planning a nice long walk today. One of my neighbours is having his hedge cut, quite a long stretch around his garden. I thought it was illegal to cut hedges at this time of the year due to disturbance of nesting birds. Can anyone advise wether this is legal or not. Jackie
