    Blue butterflies

I've been doing a search for all the blue butterfly i.d.'s on the forum, but I'm still as confused (it doesn't take much). Here are some taken today, I had my thoughts of a chalkhill blue, but then decided it was a common blue or possibly Adonis (although the pics in the book make their...

    Photo Size reduction - attachments

Have the photos that are posted within threads been reduced to a standard size? All the pic attachments I click on just recently appear to start off at a reasonable size, then reduce to a much smaller size.

    Flights Pics with 100-400 lens

Following on from Neils thread (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em). Took the first pics recently of, yes, you guessed it, kites in flight - plus one perched on the now familiar tree (approx. 150ft away) It suspect it will take me a while to get used to panning with this lens! I also need to...

    Streaked or barred?

Five buzzards hanging around this past couple of days, lots of calling etc. I can't decide on these pics, whether the bird is a juv or adult, is it streaked or barred? I think I'm looking at a streaked breast, but to be honest, I'm not 100% sure. One of the pics appears to also show a lack...

    i.d. please

Is this a 'Small heath'? The only reason I say that, is because after looking through the book this was the only one that looked vaguely similar, in that it appears to have just one "eye" thingymabob. But, it doesn't look very orange, it's all brown. Taken in Chilterns, edge of woods. Ta.

    Nests, Eggs and Nestlings

Picked up a cracking book today at Oxfam in Oxford. "Nest, Eggs and Nestlings of British & European Birds", by Colin Harrison. There are over 700 eggs and 145 nestlings illustrations. On the back of the book it's says "A book for bird-lovers, not for egg-collectors".

    Zoom lens vs prime lens

Is there really so much difference in the quality between a zoom lens and a prime lens? As I'm going for the 100-400 IS, (eventually!) I am a little concerned I may be compromising on quality here. Is the quality difference minimal? The thing that does put me off buying a variety of lens is...

    What are these?

I have no idea what these are, growing amongst other "weeds" in the garden, actually just on the edge of the wood. The stems are very firm to the touch and feel "heavy". No doubt I'll be suitably embarrassed if they turn out to be something very common indeed!

Good news for migrants, bad news for Sparrowhawks & Yellow Wagtails

'Several migratory species of bird showed a marked increase in numbers between 2003 and 2004. Over three times as many Sand Martins were encountered (representing a massive increase of 247%) and numbers of Cuckoo (a bird which has declined by 43% between 1970-2001) were up by 31%, Whitethroat...

    Pellet Contents

Stumbled upon these pellets today, not a million miles from my house. Looked up, and there was the familiar whitewash on the branches of the trees, and on the ground too. There was also a huge nest at the top of the tree. Anyway, there was a large quantity of pellets in the immediate area...

    Dismounting a back up drive

I now have a 250GB La Cie d2 backup hard drive. After backing up files, for obvious reasons I need to disconnect the back up drive from my PC. How do I do it? TIA

    My first "Swooping" pics

Yes, I know they aren't that clear or sharp, but these are the first pics with my Canon 20D. Lens is the 18-55 EFS that came with the camera. I'm waiting on the 100-400 IS lens. But for now, this will do. I do have a bit of a problem though, in that when the kites swoop down, I focus on...

A Honey Buzzard, a nightjar and a Monty

A couple of supposedly "non birding" days in Norfolk brought some excellent sightings for me, three of which I missed when I was there a couple of weeks ago. First off, was at the raptor viewing point at Great Ryburgh. Half a dozen people were sitting at the top of the field, in what must...

    Error 99

Had the 20D for 24 hours, and I am receiving "error 99" . Switch camera off, error msge disappears, until the next photo is taken, happening on almost every other photo. (Have Jessops 256 card installed for the moment) Any ideas why? It's going back to the shop on Monday.

    egg id please

Someone came across this egg, along with another half dozen in a nest built on the ground, next to hedges. Couple of them were smashed. Nest was abandoned a few days earlier. What species is it? Thanks.

I still can't find my book on wild flowers, so until I do..... On chalky grassland in the Chilterns, any ideas please?

    Focusing

Anyone had any problems with focusing on the Oly 750UZ? Last couple of days, the focus is so slow the birds have bred and raised chicks by the time the camera comes into focus. Camera approx. 18 months old. It is happening more so when I use the T-con 1.7 The whole camera just seems to be...

    Magazines. Read or unread?

A comment by Andrew in another thread got me thinking. How many of you have stacks of bird magazines waiting to be read? When, for e.g. Birdwatching/Birdwatch/Birds Illustrated drops through your letterbox, what happens to it? Is it read eagerly over the breakfast table that morning, or is...

    Hobby

Today, whilst out in the garden, I watched one of the many GSW fly east to land in the large beech tree next to the house. At the same time, flying in from the north east was a bird I wasn't too sure of. The GSW gave out an alarm call as the other bird moved in towards the GSW. This was...

    A bearded tit - finally!

Just a quick post to say I have finally seen a bearded tit. Two of them. Was in Norfolk today, (doing other stuff), and decided to pop into Titchwell this morning on the off chance, and there they were, male and female. The male gave excellent views too. Also hung around further down the...

A first in the garden - Slow worm

Saw this today, must admit I wondered what it was at first! A slow worm, right? Approx. 9" long, and it couldn't half move!

Flight Path of the Kite into the garden

Well, this is how fast these birds swoop down. Can you just about see the brown "blob"? That was the kite, coming down to pick up a very dead vole that was on the garage roof. Note the male pheasant at the top of the bank, (centre left of pic). The kite, usually does a full turn in mid...
