    Birding halfway up the Alps

Really interesting to read about your sightings. Thanks for posting. Good birding, Thomas

Thank you both. I've decided to get a new PC (I wasn't sure I wanted to spend time learning the Apple way of doing things and the one I'd looked at was probably 8 years old), which will have 16GB RAM, a 240GB SSD, USB3 etc. So I'm hoping that'll speed things up a fair bit. All the...

Thanks, I've expressed a guarded interest in a used Apple that's just come into my local computer repair shop. It'll be checked out there soon so I'm waiting to see what they say. Got a ton of photos I'd like to get to grips with! Cheers, Thomas

I had a feeling that might be the case. Anything to be gained from switching to an Apple computer? I know they are expensive. Thanks Mono.

Hi all, I've got an Acer, bought in April '17: Windows 10; AMD A10 7800 quad-core plus AMD R7 graphics; 2TB; 8GB DDR. Trouble is, it's always been quite slow, even with my old bridge cameras. Now, for example, with a Canon that produces 32MP files, on download from the camera's memory card...

Would anyone like to try these three please? Thanks, Thomas

    Another Eudonia pallida?

Also trapped this one on 12.9.'19; Norfolk, near Fakenham, to MV light; wing-length 8 mm. Must be pallida surely? Thank you, Thomas

    Eudonia pallida?

Many thanks to both of you. A new for one for the garden. Cheers, Thomas

    Eudonia pallida?

Hoping this can be confirmed. Wing-length 8mm, trapped: MV on 12th Sept. '19, near Fakenham. Norfolk, UK. Thank you for looking, Thomas

Two Crambids and a mystery Tortrix.

Hoping someone can confirm that the first is Crambus uliginosellus, found during the day at Buxton Heath, Norfolk, on 19.7.'19. The second came to an MV on 11.8.'19, near Fakenham; not the best of photos I know, but is this Agriphila latistria? The third came to the MV on the above date but I...

A few I'm struggling with - Staffordhire UK

The nearest I can get is Hedya sp. although the dark area around the tornus (trailing corner) is a bit odd. Never easy but always good fun, the micros. I think I prefer them to macros, shock horror! I hope you manage to nail down the ID. Best of luck, Thomas

    Common or Scarce Footman

Yes. Collar a rich orange and is the shape you'd expect. Also note the rich yellow legs; darker legs in Common, in the light of recent experience. Cheers, Thomas

A few I'm struggling with - Staffordhire UK

Ancylis achatana for the second image; had one here on Saturday morning. I'll have another look at the third one later. With photos, it's always a good idea to take some from the side and some from above, so all the relevant details are visible. Not that this is always possible, of course...

Tiny micros; best kit to take good photos?

Thanks Andy. What size was the spider and how far away form it were you when you took the photo? I see that Olympus has just released a Tough 6, so T5s might be going for a keener price now. Thanks for replying, Thomas

Tiny micros; best kit to take good photos?

I've posted on this forum because taking photos of some, tiny micro species is really pushing the boundaries. I've been using a Panasonic bridge camera (an FZ1000 + a Raynox 250) for a couple of years and it's very challenging trying to get good images of a beast with a forewing length of, say...

Long Range Desert Group: Western Sahara by Jeep February 2019

Your plant is very similar to Bitter Gourd, Citrullus colocynthis, which occurs in Kuwait at least. I hope this helps, Thomas
