    Cairns birders - Andy Anderson

Bit of a stab in the dark, but wondered if anyone from Cairns might have any info on local birder Andy Anderson. He and my father know each other well and have corresponded for many years, but Dad's had no response from Andy for some time now. The Cairns Esplanade crew all know each other well...

NW Sicily - April 2019 advice

I'm planning a 2-week trip to Sicily in early/mid-April, staying in the north-west close to Trapani. Family trip so will mostly be opportunistic/casual birding from the villa garden and trips out to coast and archaeological sites. Have scoured the web for trip reports, papers etc but just...

Hi all, Anyone able to shed any light on Cairns City Council's decision to cover the Esplanade mudflats in sand? Sounds like a monumental disaster! Has it started yet? Cheers

    Long-legged buzzard? Hula Valley, Israel

This photo was taken in September of this year by my friend from his balcony in the upper Hula Valley. I am assuming that it is a Long-legged buzzard (prominent dark carpals and rufous colouration) but am I correct? Makes a change from the Blue tits i see from my garden... Many thanks, Tristan

Status of the Plain Swift in Morocco

I wonder if anyone can help? I am researching the status of the Plain Swift in north-west Africa (I am hoping to undertake a study of winter movements of this species) and, amongst the reports of observations in winter, have read some intriguing hints that there may be a breeding population in...

Hi, Am off for 10 days in Valencia province in a couple of weeks and staying for a time in the Sierra de Espadan. Just wondered if anyone has been and birder there - any local knowledge would be gratefully received. The area receives a warm write-up in the Traveller's Nature Guides book by...

    Mallorca in September - RFI

Looking to head to Mallorca for a c.10-day break in mid-September with the wife and baby and wondered if anyone would be able to offer some advice... In terms of accommodation, I'd ideally like a small rural house rather than cheesy apartment - anyone recommend any such properties? In 2003 we...

    Unnatural Histories - BBC4, Saturdays 7pm

A very, very interesting series and presenting some uncomfortable and long-overdue truths about the conservation business. The series looks at the history and establishment of some of the world's greatest protected areas - this week Yellowstone, last week the Serengeti. Sadly, the stories seem...

Why no fossil rails in Macaronesia?

Having read up a great deal on rails and crakes of late, it suddenly struck me as rather odd that, unlike most other islands in the world, there appears to be an absence of endemic species/subspecies of Rallidae in the Macaronesian region. Anyone have a clue why so?

    Photo removed from Opus

Could somebody enlighten me as to why a photo may be removed from Opus please? Who decides this and for what reason? I recently added a shot of Tooth-billed bowerbird only for it to have been removed not long after. Am at a loss to know why, as it was a decent shot and slotted in quite nicely I...

    Gambia advice please...

The wife and I are thinking of getting away for some winter sunshine and thought the Gambia may be a good option for a couple of weeks in November/December.
