    Finches, Wicklow, Ireland

Hi A pair of finch-like birds came into my garden in Greystones today, making Bullfinch-like "husky bell" contact calls. From the sound, thought they were bullfinches but on seeing them, they were smaller and had more of a crossbill look to them. But the bill was apparently not crossed...

Teal sp. E Ireland Oct 27th

Hi - apologies for the appalling quality, it was very far away, and my camera's not quite up to it (that's my excuse) but wonder if there is enough in these pictures to call Green Winged? many thanks Andrew

    Godwit, E. Ireland

Taken on July 2. From Collins, I reckoned it to be an adult Black-Tailed, and from the richness and extent of the red, possibly Islandica. I don't know which of the races would be most common in Ireland during the summer and would welcome any thoughts. thanks Andrew

    Audio: moorland birdsong, E Ireland

Hi Apologies in advance for the terrible recording, hopefully you can hear the song above the wind noise. Recorded June 9 by a corrie lake in heather moorland at about 400m altitude. You can hear a Blackbird, but the one I am asking about goes something like: Twee Twee...

    Treecreeper, East Coast Reserve, Ireland

Hi, the enclosed were taken in mid-May, in an area of Willow/Birch/Alder fenland. Has the shortest bill I have seen on a Treecreeper. In pic 1 you can see the hind claw, but I can't really come to a conclusion. Impression on site was that the bird was smaller and lighter coloured than I am...

    Pipit, Ireland East

This occasional visitor to Dun Laoghaire Pier seems curiously pale and warm coloured compared to the Rock Pipits I usually see around here. Is it anything unusual, or within the normal range for this species? Thanks in advance Andrew

    Pipit, E Ireland

Hi I really hesitate to put up such a terrible snatched phone picture but hope someone may be able to make a suggestion. At the end of a long pier - my impression was of a very pale warm-coloured Rock Pipit. None of the streaking was darker than a warm beige. Thanks! Andrew

BHG - persistent summer hood, Greystones, E Ireland

Hi - Probably nothing unusual here; this picture was taken late November among a group of BH and Med Gulls. Perhaps I am googling the wrong thing but can't find much data on lingering breeding plumage like this. Thanks Andrew

Recording: Wader, Kilcoole Irl, Oct 30

Hi Just got a distant binocular view, no camera with me. Size, shape, head markings and Jizz suggested a Phalarope to me, but by no means sure. Got a rather faint but relatively clear recording of call, wonder if anyone can comment Thanks! Andrew

    Just a Linnet?

Hi - If I stare at this long enough I start to see a smaller, paler bill. But I just need someone to tell me it's a Linnet Thanks Andrew

Which Diver (Kilcoole, IRL, Oct 15)

I guess this has to be Red Throated, just can't quite nail the plumage. Immature/transitional perhaps? Thanks Andrew

White-Eared or White-Cheeked Bulbul? Abu Dhabi

Hi No pictures for this one I'm afraid; just returned from a business trip to Abu Dhabi. A very common bird in the environs of the hotel was what I assumed to be White-Cheeked Bulbul, but now I wonder if it was White-Eared. Very tame, almost exactly house sparrow sized (mixed with House...

    Corncrakes from every angle

Just returned from a non-birding trip to Inishbofin off the coast of Galway. Hoped to get a few hours to search for Corncrake, but no need! They were calling from every field and every roadside. Great experience :-)

    Merlin/Hobby ID tips?

Hi - Saw a very small Falcon briefly over my garden in Greystones, just south of Dublin, chasing insects among swifts. Garden adjoins an area of coastal scrubland. Has to be either Hobby or Merlin, either would be a major garden tick for me, but have to admit Merlin is statistically much...

    Gulls behaving like Swallows

Hi - This was new to me: there was a large hatch of winged ants yesterday in the warm still air, and at my local harbour a large number of mostly Blackheaded Gulls were wheeling and dodging to catch them in flight. Quite a sight. There were a few Common Gull and even a couple of Kittiwake...

    ID of birdforum logo?

OK I'm bored...this has probably been asked before but I can't find it on search. I assume the silhouette in the logo is Herring Gull, but does anyone know different? Andrew

Late notice I know, but if anyone would like to join me in Denmark one of those days I'd be delighted.

    Wader, Kilcoole, E. Ireland Yesterday

Rubbish phone digiscoped pictures, don't you love 'em Brackish marshland; the wader on the right. Roosting with bill pressed into neck, couldn't get him to wake up. Redshank I guess, though you can see the red on the Oystercatcher's legs I didn't get a red impression from this bird. Also...

Thank you Maudoc (Maurizio) and Roberta

Hi, I recently visited Lake Garda, and (briefly) Verona. Although the weather combined with my inablilty to get the right bus stopped us birding together, I met up with Maurizio and Roberta in Verona on the 27th. You could not hope to meet a nicer couple, their generosity and friendliness...

    Another fungus please

Hi - am a complete novice with fungi, but was wondering if anyone can identify the enclosed? Growing on old oak stump in broadleaved woodland, E. Ireland, Aug 8th. I probably picked it too early for good identification. Light makes it look a little yellower than it really is. Honey/brown...

Hi - as a GSW obsessive, I'd be really grateful if anyone could record news, sightings, personal experience of GSW in Ireland. I have been finding it difficult to get all news from this year. thanks! Andrew

    Fab Lunchbreak

Not a lister, but have certainly beaten my previous record for "most species seen while standing at one spot" today in the local (Cabinteely) park at lunch. The trees and grass were alive with sights and sounds Thrushes: Full house - Song, Mistle, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Redwing Crows...

What's the BF policy on used nest pics for ID?

Found a long-forgotten nestbox in my garden that was occupied this year. Would like to show the nest for ID but don't know if that's allowed. Thanks Andrew

Wing formations on Mallard - Yorkshire

Hi - this is one from a couple of months ago. These strange sail-like formations struck me as odd. Is it a phenomenon of moulting? Haven't seen it before thanks Andrew

    Under the radar

Hi - was wondering if anyone else has trouble with certain species escaping their notice - in my case particularly bad with Stock Dove, Redpoll and Common Gull. I rarely see these three species, even though I'm certain they manage to fly right past me without registering on my (admittedly...
