    Derbyshire County Birding

Yep, I had a Shag the day before Valentine's Day. As always, I'm suffering from premature identification

    Derbyshire County Birding

Sorry this is late, but I was at Carsington yesterday and 90% certain had a Shag. Only had bins and I was looking off Stones Island towards Millfields. It was really difficult to watch on the water (surf was up, dudes!), but it then flew way off heading into Hopton Arm, though it might have...

    Marsh Warbler Gosport Hampshire?

Good God, that mimicry of the police siren is unbelievable. Seriously impressive!

    Derbyshire County Birding

Afternoon at Carsington. 2 Whimbrels off Stones Island on the next rocky island (don't know what it's called), they were flying over Stones Island calling for a while then settled at 3.45 and were still there when we left after 4. Little Gull at the Wildlife Centre. Both divers between Sheepwash...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi Dave, glad to hear a few got it. I waited around for a while but I couldn't find a single birder to tell. Had to leave suddenly when my daughter went into meltdown!

    Derbyshire County Birding

Wood Warbler at Carsington today on Stones Island in the first little patch of silver birch & scrub on the right. It was singing around 2.30 and showing quite well. Also 2 Little Gulls by the Wildlife Centre, 5 Lesser Whitethroats and a single Common Whitethroat singing between Sheepwash and the...

Once again, Marsh or Willow ? English Midlands

Based on how so many of us repeatedly cock these two up (and ringers are also getting them wrong), does anyone else worry whether the historic published range and population of Willow Tit and Marsh Tit could be completely and utterly wrong? How do we know whether surveyors were identifying them...

    Panasonic FZ-200

Well as I've said before, other than the really annoying manual focus (which I've pretty much given up on now), for what I want, this camera is just fantastic. Best 480 quid I ever spent!

    Panasonic FZ-200

And just so you can see how useful this camera would be when a Tufted Puffin comes past you, and you don't want the birding world thinking you're a bigger liar than Jeffrey Archer

    Panasonic FZ-200

Some more pics. I've got no intention whatsoever of deploying fieldcraft or using any skill at all to take photos of birds. I just want something that I can achieve an acceptable record shot of birds I stumble upon. However, having seen those shots on Flickr, I'm almost tempted to try and use...

    Panasonic FZ-200

I think the verdict is they're pretty much the same, give or take a few minor changes. If you have the FZ150 you probably wouldn't be wise to upgrade. I tried to get the FZ150 because it was being advertised for so much cheaper than FZ200, but it had sold out everywhere when I was looking. I...

    Panasonic FZ-200

Thanks Malcolm. Took a while but did it in the end. I think I'll just make sure to record in MP4 from now on!

    Panasonic FZ-200

I though I'd set it to record in MP4, but it's not showing up in iMovie. So presumably it's recorded as some stupid .mts file or something.

    Panasonic FZ-200

Probably a really stupid question, but how do I transfer video into iMovie to edit and upload? I really can't fathom it out.

    British and Irish..or just British?

I think you're all taking this far too seriously. In my experience, the typical twitcher from England/Wales/Scotland (so nobody gets offended) struggles to sit down on a chair or even eat their Ready Brek with a plastic spoon, so the whole Imperial Britain thing might be somewhat above their...

    British and Irish..or just British?

It's not that it's not interesting or valid, it's just that it's been done to death eight billion times before. At least.

    British and Irish..or just British?

Well if this same old boring argument is going to get all ridiculous, inhabitants of the whole of the island of Ireland are more than entitled to tick birds in Great Britain, seeing as it was the Dalriada migration from modern day County Antrim into south-west Scotland that constituted the first...

    Panasonic FZ-200

I still really like the camera, but I'm seriously struggling with over-exposing white. Look at the isolated patches of white on this Wigeon taken today. Any general photography tips to help me?

    Panasonic FZ-200

Can't say I'm having any problem with the autofocus, however herons, pipits and grouse are not exactly skulking warblers. But these two were taken through a few reeds just in front of me, and autofocus had no problem locking onto what I wanted. However, having fiddled about with it, I really...

    How to see Leach's Petrel

Anyone know where the report of 2 Leach's past Leasowe gunsite over high tide yesterday came from? Because I was at Leasowe gunsite over high tide and there were no other birders there. And I didn't see any Leach's. Only an early Manx, Bonxie and Arctic Skua hanging around battering distant gulls.

    Panasonic FZ-200

Grouse photo was taken an hour before dusk with zoom up to 24x. The herons and Speckled Wood butterfly were early morning in retina damaging bright light. Still messing about a lot with white balance. I'm really enjoying the camera. I find it really user-friendly, intuitive to operate, and for...

    Panasonic FZ-200

Had a pitiful attempt at flight shots as well. Sparrowhawk, Swallows and one final Meadow Pipit, just for fun.
