    Female Kestrel, Paphos headland yesterday.

I was also on Paphos headland yesterday before going to the airport. Small world. Only saw Common Kestrel for what it's worth.

    Common Eider Morecambe Bay

There have been several counts over the winter of upwards of 5000 Eider off Foulney / Walney so still large numbers in the area. They seem to be breeding more at Chapel Island than Walney Island these days, but as far as I know still use Foulney in some numbers. I didn't think divebombing...

How many of the potential raptor species for the U.K have people seen?

This is true, but there are records in the UK from when falconers' escapes were arguably less of an issue and when the species was in less trouble in Eastern Europe. They were also on remote islands.

    Yellow-breasted bunting?

Yes very good Butty, contrary as ever. Any decent field guide has flight images, try getting a rarity accepted without images or recordings by saying its flight action matched the description in IOEPASL.

    Yellow-breasted bunting?

This may not be a popular view but I think this is the fundamental problem with the field guide to passerines in flight that came out a few years back. You hear a bird that sounds strange or see features that look odd but it's ultimately a few seconds of observation, otherwise you don't need a...

    Iberian Chiffchaff dilemma

It's still very early for most species to have young. Has it picked up song, a call or do you not know. As well as 'tentative singers' there are birds which combine Chiff Chaff and Willow Warbler song that can sound a bit like Iberian Chiffs, I think I've heard these are generally Willow...

Redpoll - common vs lesser - UK

I would say they are all Lessers but I'm not sure what you mean about sound leading you one way, I thought they all sounded the same.

    Thanks Pat. Yes Paphos, Cyprus.

    Paphos RFI

I don't normally bother people on here for site gen, but we've changed our holiday plans relatively late in the day from Porto Santo to Paphos as the former became unwieldy as flights kept changing. Can anyone recommend any sites other than the headland? We will be staying at Louis Phaeton...

at last the shell guide british birds

Reminds me of a lot of the stuff DIM Wallace went on to do.

at last the shell guide british birds

So were the illustrations in the German version all done specifically for it John or are you saying reproduction was part of the issue with the uk version?

at last the shell guide british birds

I always assumed the Bruun and Singer guide was the one Bill Oddie sent up in his Little Black Bird Book - 'common where there are lots of them', overly busy layout etc.

at last the shell guide british birds

I don't really get the 'at last' - seems to be easily obtainable for a fiver or less on the internet. I thought the illustrations were good for their time, but strangely badly reproduced. The cover doesn't show how washed out some of the images looked inside.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Well quite. I don't know if the Kenn Kaufmann quote has been mentioned above but in case not: “Birdwatching is something that we do for enjoyment, so if you enjoy it, you are already a good birder. If you enjoy it a lot, you are a great birder.”

    Bean Goose Identification

That's why ELU is asking, whether that's a Taiga or a Tundra, and they've mentioned that there were hundreds of Greylag present. I can't add much from these pics, but I can see why you've queried it. It does look quite long necked but hard to judge size in water.

    Shaming birdwatchers on social media

Did you want to it bringing back to shaming birders on social media? My view is that it's like lots of things on social media, there's definitely some behaviour that should be called out in some way but it inevitably degenerates into insults and name calling in reality and probably achieves...

    Shaming birdwatchers on social media

There's been a lot of recent discussion on Shetland nature forums on Facebook about the fact that they are not doing better there.

Cormorants in south west England (Bath area)

No there isn't a release programme for Cormorants, rather the opposite with persecution in some places.
