    Barefoot Birding

Not to mention broken glass, barbed wire, tin cans, hypos, used "disposable" nappies etc., etc. Oh to be in Scotland!

    Reeves pheasant, Shotley, Suffolk

On my way to my regular patch, the River Orwell, on Saturday, I had a brief but conclusive view from the bus of a splendid male Reeves pheasant in a field by the road. There was also a hen pheasant in the vicinity, but I couldn't tell if she was the same species. Does anybody know if there's a...

    Help with native hedging

It also has vicious spines, notorious for causing septic wounds. A pity, because otherwise it's a lovely plant. MarkA

    Unusual/rare birds in your garden.

Hi Craig I'm in SW Ipswich, I've only got a tiny backyard and never had Black Redstart in it, but I did see/hear one down at the docks two summers ago, and i saw one in a back garden in Wood Green, North London on Easter Sunday 1996. I've had Brent goose, Hobby and Waxwing flying over. Best ever...

Keep an eye peeled for Chiffchaffs. I used to live in Bristol (Windmill Hill) and every winter a Chiffchaff would visit the garden for a few days around Christmas/New Year. Mark

Would collared doves ever nest in a dovecote?

Hi Nicola I'm 99% sure the answer is no. To the best of my knowledge, they build their own nests in trees, like woodpigeons, rather than nesting in holes like rock/domestic doves. MarkA

    really impressed...

Nice to see that cr*p being used constructively. I don't think I'd want to use them in my garden (if I had a garden) but they'd be good for school Nature Gardens etc. One reservation is that they might be more likely to attract predators to the nest; how resistant would that plastic be to the...

What winter birds would you like to see?

My ambitions are a little more modest than others'. Glaucous Gull and/or Merlin on my patch would suit me fine. Mark

    Bristol

In Bristol there's a regular roost at Temple Meads station, and a smaller one nearby at St Mary Redcliffe church. Probably not the same numbers as out on the Levels, but worth checking out. Mark

How many birdboxes can I have in my garden?

I'm not an expert, but I'd say put up as many boxes as you have time, money and energy for. the birds will choose the ones they like and ignore the ones they don't, and the ones they don't may provide winter roosting sites or shelter for hibernating insects. The important thing is to provide a...

Interesting. There's been a party of 7 or 8 Slavs on the Orwell by Fox's Marina for the last couple of weeks. Saw them on Thursday. A mini influx? Mark

Hi mbrtopaz, welcome to birdforum and welcome to Suffolk. I'm just down the road from you in Ipswich. Don't know the rest of suffolk well but I regularly walk the south bank of the Orwell, as well as occasional trips to Trimley etc., and i can highly recommend it, particularly in winter. Access...

    Hedges - your thoughts.

Hi Andy Always glad to hear somebody's getting rid of Leylandii. This sounds like a marvellous opportunity for a mixed native species hedge - a great way of getting a variety of tree/shrub species into a small space and a magnet for wildlife. Basic mix: 50% - 75% Hawthorn 10% Hazel plus your...

I think I've coined a new birding word

This happened to me a few weeks ago. I went out to try and find one of the Yellow-browed Warblers that were turning up on the East Coast, I need one both for my Life list and for my River list. In fact, I took two days off work specially to find one. The first day I went along the south side of...
