    Canon 30D - still a good choice?

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting a digital SLR for bird photography. I can get a new 30D body for £460 and wondered if this was a good choice. I think I've really narrowed it down to a 30D or the Nikon D80. Any thoughts on the pros and cons of these? ....or should I wait for the...

    Jet-skiers - what to do ?

There seems to be a growing problem with jet-skiers around the Langstone Harbour area near Portsmouth. There can be up to a dozen of them at once speeding up and down the harbour entrance and up into the main harbour that contains roosting and nesting areas for thousands of birds (this area is...

    Conquest 8x50 and 10x50

Has anyone tried these binoculars ? I just noticed them while viewing the Zeiss website and didn't realise that 50mm models had been introduced. http://www.zeiss.de/C12567A80033F8E4/Contents-Frame/436FD37CCBF86D1941256A690045E754

    Leica 8x32 BA / BN - even illumination ?

One thing that really bugs me in binoculars is uneven field illumination. This can show up as a brighter circle around the center of the field or conversly as a brighter centre and a dimmer surround. I guess I notice this a lot because most of my birding involves scanning large areas of sky or...

    BN Coating improvement?

I owned an early Leica 7x42 BN but never got the 'wow' factor from it. I tried a brand new one last week and it was very nice. The coatings on my 'old' pair were predominantly straw coloured. The new ones are deep green on the objectives with faint deep purple/magenta reflections from internal...

Advice for birding in Singapore ?

Singapore - Advice for birding ? I may be visiting Singapore for a few days and wondered if anyone had advice for a bit of easy bird-spotting. I don't expect I'll have much opportunity as I'll be working but it'd be handy to have a few hints and tips. Cheers John

    Weaver

A couple of people have asked about Weaver binoculars in the past few months and I came across this review. Thought it might be of interest. http://www.outdoorlife.com/outdoor/gear/fieldtested/article/0,20280,binoculars-0012,00.html

Record price for used 7x42 Classic ?

Is this a record ? In the last few days a Zeiss 7x42 Classic (described as mint) was sold on eBay in the UK for £845. Let me type that again...£845 ! Has anyone seen one go for more ? I guess these are becoming serious collectors items. If you bought one in mint condition for this much money I...

    New glasses cure SE black-outs

Having struggled with the infamous SE black-out problem for some time I'd finally decided to sell my 10x42 SE. However, I recently changed my glasses and when I picked up the SE again the black-outs were gone. Hurray ! It's like using a different binocular. The new glasses are a little bit...

Swift 8.5x44 HHS - Field of view confusion

I've seen contradictory figures published for the field of view for these roof prisms. Can an owner let me know what's actually printed on the binocular? The figures I've seen are: 102m @1000m (Warehouse Express and others) This equals 5.8 degrees (taking 1 degree as approx. 17.5m), making the...

    Best 7x42 (low/mid-price)

I like 7x and I'm interested in finding a good low to mid-price 7x42 (available in the UK market) that I can take out with the kids, leave in the car, lend to careless friends etc. without worrying about them. Does anyone have any recommendations ? I'm aware that field of view and apparent field...

CA - now you see it, now you don't

It's common knowledge that some people see more chromatic abberation than others. What I've also started to notice is that some days I see a lot more CA even though I'm using the same binoculars. This seems to happen when I've had a visually 'heavy' week (lots of reading, computer screens etc.)...

    The 7x50 porro revisited

Like me, you probably wouldn't give a lot of thought to a 7x50 porro since a 7x42 roof is more portable and gives a 6mm exit pupil that's going to be adequate under almost all conditions. I have an old Nikon 7x50 marine porro that's got very high quality optics but is only single-coated (not...

    Steiner 7x50 Commander V - any experience ?

Anyone got experience with this model ? It's really a marine binocular, having individual eyepiece focussing. This doesn't bother me as I do a lot of observing at longer distances over marshes and shoreline. I've seen this at a good price and wondered about the quality of build and optics. Thanks.

    Minox BL 10x42 BR

Anyone using this model ? I've seen positive comments about the 8x42 version but nothing about the 10x. Anyone know how they compare to the 8x or to other 10x models in the same price bracket ? Many thanks.

    Victory B 56mm models - any users

Victory B 8x56 10x56 12x56 Anyone used these (8x56 / 10x56 /12x56) ? I'm thinking of changing my 7x50's for the 8x56. I don't mind the weight as they'd be mainly used for low-light birding and astronomy. The only review I can find is this one which seems pretty positive...

Celestron Outland LX - anyone tried ?

Anyone actually looked through the 8x42 roofs ? They're not phase-coated, but then neither are the popular Nikon Sporters. Seems like a nice package for the price. Here's a link to the details: http://www.dhinds.co.uk/pages/fullProd.php?id=484

Where are all the Swifts ?

Has anyone else noticed that most models of Zeiss, Leica, Swaro, Nikon etc. can be readily obtained on the used market (e.g. eBay), but Swifts seem hard to come by ? Sure, you can pick up used 8.5x44 Audubon porros, but other models hardly appear. Is this because Swift owners are pretty...
