    What tree for birds?

Maybe plant two smaller trees - one deciduous fruit-bearing "bush" and another conifer for a bit of life in the winter. Steve

Help with White Stork leg rings

Hi NG, I presume that you are also interested in readings from birds in SPain as well as from those in Africa? If so I'll try and take a few readings the next time I go to the Lleida dump, where there are currently several hundred White Storks. Steve

What are the target birds that North American look for when visiting Europe?

Be careful with what you wish for Labrador Duck! In some parts of Spain you might get to see the birds the locals see when they're served to you on a plate! Steve

What are the target birds that North American look for when visiting Europe?

Coming back to the original question: I just guided a Canadian birder and his two main targets were Wallcreeper and Lammergeier. Nevertheless, he didn't scorn the Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse or the black Wheatear either. Steve

    Hiola from Spain. Vultures question

It's more likely to be found and appreciated by magpies or crows than by griffon vultures. Steve

Spain, Valencia - Moro Marsh birds

Hi Steve - now you probably know that Bluethroats are regular wintering and migratory birds over much of Spain, usually found along the edges of wetland areas. Besides breeding in the Sierra de Gredos that is. Steve

    Books about Birding Travels

Thanks for the plug Kathy! I'm so glad I didn't have to be the first to mention it :) BFers who have never heard of "Flying over the Pyrenees, standing on the plains" can download a couple of free chapters from the BirdingInSpain website here...

    Annoying birding conversations in hides

The most memorable event that happened to me at Lakenheath was getting caught in the poplar wood by a raging storm, lightning all around me and getting drenched. It's obviously a world of contrasts! Steve

    Bird names capitalisation

I think it's a very good question, reflecting the relative anarchy of the English language, compared to Spanish for example, which is regented by a respectful (dusty?) Royal Language Academy. In my second book I decided to use lower case except in cases like the already mentioned Cetti's...

    Red kite garden feeding survey

Wow! Things have come a long way since I left the UK! Do people really feed Red Kites in their gardens these days? On what - road kill? Steve

    Annoying birding conversations in hides

Thanks Mike. According to my dictionary blonde (with an e) means a woman with pale yellow hair. Although if it weren't the case would anyone be scandalized? Steve

    Annoying birding conversations in hides

This imaginary conversation has never happened to me, but it would be quite annoying: Beautiful blonde: I'm quite new at this birding thing, I wonder if you wouldn't mind being my guide for the day. I'd be most grateful. Annoying, because I wouldn't be able to concentrate on the birds. Steve

    The World's best bird photographer?

I'm a great fan of Markus Varesvuo's work too. I don't know if Vincent Munier takes bird photos, but his work is also outstanding. Dutchman Frank Dröge keeps a low profile, but his work is certainly worth a look. In fact the more I think about that question the more I'm tempted to say that it is...

    Bird videos, mine and yours

The Bonelli's Eagle video seems to be the most popular: The Montagu's Harrier head a good head-start but the Bonelli's has all but caught up in terms of number of views. Which one do you prefer? Steve

60.000 finches to be killed in Catalonia!!

Catalonia explains this "exception" to the Wild Birds Directive as a traditional and selective activity that is closely controlled. On and off I've been giving identification classes to the Catalan Rural Guards for the last 7 or 8 years, so that they are capable of identifying the species...

    Bird feeders in Spain

I know about the birds on Mallorca Mike! And I envy your location - so close to the sea. In fact I was quite skeptical about going to Mallorca for the first time but I liked it so much I included a whole section on it in my website! Happy birding. Steve

    Bird feeders in Spain

I'd like things to be that way Mark, but I just don't think the tendency will be the same in Spain in the next 40 years as it was in Britain in the last 40 years. National character has a lot to do with it. Most birders here are young and of limited means and are pursuing careers in biology...
