    "Erasing history" in the WP

If your mother tongue is English, I doubt that you are pronouncing e.g. Stejneger, Krüper, Radde, Güldenstädt, Ménétriés or Cretzschmar correctly. So basically I am doing you a service! (To be fair, the English pronounce "Cetti" better than the Dutch). Many of the names below do not deserve...

Earthcreeper in the Campos de Cultivo de Asia, Peru

In the late afternoon of 29 July, we came across this earthcreeper in the Campos de Cultivo de Asia, on the Peruvian coast south of Lima (here). With its long tail, plain reddish wings, long curved bill and strong supercilium it looks to me like a (somewhat dishevelled) White-throated...

1st year Little versus Least Tern

This must be very useful for people who can actually remember such stuff. I see so few terns that any bird not in summer plumage has me in despair...

Nominees for the least intelligent bird in the world

Mine is: Canada Goose I would't dare call a bird "stupid" of course, although it is tempting in this case. At my local patch, a pair of Mute Swans is nesting. In itself this is quite stupid, because they haven't been successful in the last ten years. A pair of Canada Geese also seems to like...

    Dutch and Belgian Wolf cubs

Both in the Netherlands (somewhere north of Apeldoorn) and in Belgium (somewhere in the northeast), wolf cubs have been sighted. The first ones since they returned – probably even earlier than expected. Some bad video: https://www.nu.nl/273888/video/drie-jonge-wolven-gespot-op-de-veluwe.html

    Snake, Mishmi Hills, NE India

Can anyone shed light on this one? I was thinking of an Amphiesma species, but (other than the family) I am likely wrong! See also: https://observation.org/waarneming/view/172215558

    Snake Guyana

A very slender diurnal snake, first on the road, then climbed into low vegetation upon being disturbed by me.

2000 pairs of Agami Heron in one colony

I always thought chancing upon one in a rainforest creek was the best you could get. Apparently not: http://www.dutchbirding.nl/news.php?id=1040

    Bat roosting, distant pic, Germany

While searching for Rock Bunting at the Drachenfels south of Bonn this afternoon I found this (small) bat that flew about and decided to roost on the nicely warmed-up rocks. It was very distant, but would any id be possible?

    Ornamental Elm-like tree

I found this impressive tree in my neighbourhood. At first I thought "that's a bright elm!" but it's obviously something else. Any ideas?

    Snake in Panama (Nusagandi)

I had to prod this fierce-looking individual in Nusagandi a bit to see if it was alive. It was still on the same rock a week later. Any ideas what it could be? It was probably my first venomous snake in the Americas.

    Summer Ladies-Tresses (Netherlands)

These grow "somewhere" within their former distribution, where they had gone extinct about half a century ago. Discovered just two years ago on some recently scraped ground, the number of flowering plants has apparently quadrupled since last year. I assume they are the real deal, although a few...

    Qinghai (Tibetan plateau) rodents

Could anyone enlighten me on what I have photographed? The grey rodent is quite large, inquisitive, lives in colonies and warns with double "chk" sounds. Seen on the plateau at about 4300 m and at Er La Pass at 4600 m. At first I assumed I was dealing with a pika... The bicoloured one was...

Honey / Common Buzzard: direct comparison

Maybe a picture says more than a 1000 words? Seen this evening, just north of the less-than-picturesque town of Marl, Germany. The one on the left is the Honey Buzzard in case you're wondering.

    Apamea or something completely different?

Found this one in a grassy verge next to a corn field in western Germany. To me it looks like Reddish Light Arches, but this would be most unexpected... so I'm likely wrong.

    Death Adder, Tanimbar

We managed to almost step on this species twice on Yamdena (Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia). I'm pretty sure it is a Death Adder, so would that make it Northern Acanthophis praelongus? The reptile database also lists laevis for Tanimbar.

Orchids on Terschelling (NL) - status of "podesta"?

I went for a hectic plant twitch on the Dutch island of Terschelling yesterday. 6.5 hours walking & cycling in strong winds turned out to give just enough time to see most of the targets, some of which –in a Dutch context– only occur on this island. The late spring cost me a Scirpus... Two of...

    Observation databases

Let's stop clogging up a bird id thread any further... Jandaya Parakeet, Golden-capped or intergrade?

A few snaps from near Estância (Sergipe), where we saw a few dozen of these birds. The greenish tones to head and breast on most birds are wrong for Jandaya, but the Golden-capped Parakeets we saw further south had their breasts the same colour as the upperparts. Should I log them as intergrades?
