    Pan Species Listers anywhere?

Something I have experimented with is pan listing but without the requirement of identifying everything right away. That you can't identify, just describe it to the best of your ability. That way you can more quickly get an idea of the species diversity of a single site and not spoil your fun...

    Listing Burnout

I have stopped keeping year lists. With kids it is too difficult to chase after species to add to a year list. The only lists I now maintain is a life list of life and a birding commute list. I halfheartedly submit to ebird. The thing I like least about ebird is counting the number of...

    Your Worst Blockers

My worst blockers are Spruce Grouse Brewer's Blackbird Orange-crowned Warbler (likely seen, difficult to ID) Northern Goshawk Yellow-bellied Flycatcher Nelson's Sparrow None of these are rare in my area but I haven't got them yet.

    Pan Species Listers anywhere?

886 and counting I am at 866 taxa myself, and my mix is different with less birds. I live in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. I have included the latest find in each category, if found this year. I have quite a few photos to identify and I am currently working on the moths. I maintain a website...

    AlexC's Life List of Life

4 1/2 years later Four and half years later, I am over 800 species now in the Ontario area. The biggest gains have been in botany having added nearly 200 new species. My favorites areas, birds, dragonflies and butterflies are deep into diminishing returns area, as I have about 75% of what I...

    Matts Holistic Devon list 2010

It seems that the UK does have lower species diversity in some areas compared to Ontario. The UK has only 56 species of dragonflies, compared to just over 170 in Ontario. In my area I believe between 100-120 species occur out of the 135 species in the excellent field guide I use. What seems...

    Matts Holistic Devon list 2010

Note that I said life list. I have been working on the birds for eight years, butterflies and dragonflies for four years and most of the rest for less. The circle for our naturalist club is very large -- a 80 km radius circle translates into 20000 square kilometers. The reason for the large...

    Matts Holistic Devon list 2010

How large is the area you are doing? I maintain a holistic life list myself but I limit myself to a 80 km radius circle of North Bay, Ontario, Canada. You have already surpassed me, I only have 566 taxa so far. Only 20 taxa come from outside this circle and I prefer to stick with a 40 km...

    Ultimate Gear for Naturalists

Another neat possibility would be to have a pair of binoculars (or hands per headphones) that had a voice activated digital voice recorder. When you are looking for warblers or are in any other place with high bird activity you can name out the species quietly as you see them. The voice...

    Ultimate Gear for Naturalists

Not sure where this post should go so I am putting it here. I am thinking about the ultimate gear for naturalists with emphasis on the ease of recording observations for the widest range of natural phenomena possible. This is an exercise, a dreaming of what should be possible with our...

And one field guide format to rule them all...

Hmmm, as I see it birder's have it good. Try a few field guides from other flora and fauna. In my dragonfly books that I own, the families are in the same order but the species are in quite different orders. I have seen mammal books in nearly reverse order as others.

    AlexC's Life List of Life

I also have a list of life . I keep it in a spreadsheet with a lot of worksheets. I have designed it to be somewhat easy to keep up to date. I prefer common names but utilize scientific names in brackets if that's all that available or to get the identification to a lower taxonomic level...

Females Common and Red-breasted Mergansers compared.

Taken near the shore of Trout Lake in North Bay, Ontario. A Long-tailed Duck was also there on that day. Neither the Red-breasted Merganser nor the Long-tailed Duck are common in the North Bay area so these were pleasing sightings.

What do you like and dislike about where you live naturewise?

North Bay, Ontario doesn't have the diversity of mammals, country is beautiful with diverse habitats. Poor infrastructure here too, many many logging roads too dangerous for my car. However most of the best birding places in the area are not remote. Major birding hotspots are ten hours away...

What do you like and dislike about where you live naturewise?

I live in North Bay, Ontario, Canada. What I like: -Access to a variety of established trails and an abundance of crown land. -We have a cross-country skiing and snowshoeing season that lasts between a few weeks to about four months (possibly more). Average is 2 1/2 months. With caution you...

What non-birding lists do you keep?

Sounds like fun but too expensive for me. With the amount of money I make, I have chosen to diversity into other fauna and flora that can be seen locally, instead of going long distances to get more birds. Driving for long distances is also boring and takes away from much of the available time...

What non-birding lists do you keep?

Do you try identifying non-game fish? I doubt many do. But, in the course of new obsession of listing field guides on everything in nature (www.ontariofieldnaturalists.org) I found a few books for the all-fish enthusiast audience including Fish Watching: An Outdoor Guide to Freshwater Fishes...

What non-birding lists do you keep?

I keep life lists for butterflies, dragonflies, moths, miscellaneous bugs, mammals, herps, atmospheric optics, wildflowers, lichens and trees. The botany lists are quite short though. I keep year lists for dragonflies (with damselflies), butterflies and moths. The dragonfly list includes more...

    Brent't Odes List

My favorite moments: - Catching a Mottled Darner with a shortened net from a kayak. I shortened the net to a two foot handle for easier handling but that made darners very tough to catch but I did net one. - Identifying a Haigen's Bluet without a hand lens. With my severe nearsighted I could...

    Public transportation birds

Excellent. I do something almost on the same lines. I keep a commuting list. All but one maybe two of the birds of this list of 73 were obtained while on my bicycle. It took about five years to build up this list.

    Brent't Odes List

Brent's Odes List Odes include both dragonflies and damselflies. Two years ago I started noticing dragonflies. Last year I started counting them with the help of an insect net made for me and close-up focusing binoculars. This year I got a better net, a hand lens, clear containers and a...

Nature's 500: Year List of Life and Natural Phenomena

Hmmm, I have been thinking and I believe the Nature's 500 concept is flawed. 500 species in one year is nearly impossible for a new naturalist and can be too easy for very seasoned naturalists. Perhaps a better concept would be to try to find about 100 new things in nature in your local area...

Nature's 500: Year List of Life and Natural Phenomena

Similar in concept to "AlexC Life List of Life", I was thinking about a list that would encourage people to look for as much in nature as possible. I could call it Nature's 500. The rules are as follows: -You can include anything that occurs in nature: flora, fauna, astronomical objects...

American Three-Toed Woodpecker Northern Hawk Owl White-winged Crossbill Red Crossbill Tundra Swan Sharp-Shinned Hawk Lincoln Sparrow Blackburnian Warbler Canada Warbler Wilson's Warbler Ten so far this year. Last year I had about 25 lifers by this point in the year. I am trying to compensate...
