Just to fill in a bit more detail on the buzzard - it was found with an injured wing by a local falconer and brought to a vet who gave it little chance of ever flying again. Maurice Conaghy took on to take it into his care and see what he could do, and after about a year and a half of nursing...

Thanks Tom and thanks for putting in the link. Seemingly the Sunday 9 o'clock news gets the biggest audience for news for the week so it really was fantastic for the project.

I spoke to them on Monday, they had severe losses and had found a lot of dead chicks but they hadn't completed a full chick count at that stage and didn't know how many they have left. The latest from Baltray is that 4 more chicks have hatched so we now have 21. This is still an excellent...

It really was an excellent night and a huge thank you is due to Cathal Johnson who more or less single handedly organised the whole thing, a great effort which really paid off and is hugely appreciated. Thanks to Mark Dearey too for use of the Spirit Store and for donating a hamper of beer...

The Little Tern project in Baltray suffered a blow Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, with 44 eggs being predated. Our main suspects are gulls. The electric fence was fully functional and there were no signs that it had been breached, plus the way we have the fencing sectioned and the areas...

The first 2 little tern chicks hatched this morning. The number of nests has risen to 29, with more birds still digging nest holes and engaging in courtship.

The count at Baltray at the moment is 31 nests with 58 eggs, though we suspect that 4 of these have been abandoned, which would leave us with more realistic figures of 27 nests and 54 eggs. We had 21 successful nests last year so this is certainly a good improvement. The earliest possible...

The little tern nest count was 7 as of yesterday. For whatever reason they have been a lot slower than expected, but the full 40+ birds (same number as last year) are all around, digging away at scrapes etc. They're getting there slowly but surely!

Found the first little tern egg at Baltray yesterday evening. They seem to be a bit behind other colonies, in Kilcoole and in the UK, but hopefully now that things have started they'll catch up quickly.

Hi Niall Haven't found any eggs yet at Baltray, although the signs are there that they are preparing to lay, as in landing, digging holes, courtship displays. We'll be keeping a very close eye over the next few days as we'd expect to see eggs any day now. Numbers are up and down with the...

Hi Dolce Chances are what you saw was a stoat. Stoats and pine martens are both long thin animals, but pine martens are extremely rare and there are very few local records. Stoats are a lot more common but at the same time you would still be lucky to see one. At a glance the two animals look...

Help needed Sat 10th (tomorrow)! Its very short notice but if anyone is available tomorrow afternoon we have a jcb hired to put the fencing up out at Baltray and need people to help out, the same as last year. The chicken wire will need to be attached to the posts and we hope if we get this...

There seems to have been a good influx of swifts yesterday, when I stepped out of the house yesterday morning there were around 40 in the sky above the house, and the skies in Drogheda in general seemed to be full of them.

Certainly could be Pluvius, they are still very mobile at the moment with no real signs of them settling yet. Last year from comparing notes with Kilcoole it seemed that some days a large part of the little tern group would travel between Baltray and Kilcoole, sometimes even twice a day, so I'm...

Sean Smith found a nest on the shingle at Baltray yesterday evening with 3 eggs in it. We'd have to assume that these must be Ringed Plover eggs. The nest appeared to be abandoned as the eggs were partially covered with sand. We've set up a blog on the Louth Nature Trust website where the...

Little Terns Maurice Conaghy saw 4 Little Terns at Baltray this afternoon. That's just about 1 week later than last year. Time to get the digging gear out again.... I'll put a post up when we have plans as to when we'll be putting up the cordon/fencing etc. And then of course we'll be...

Tommy spotted some sandmartins Ganderstown this morning and I had a look too at lunchtime, they were busy checking out the old nest holes in the sandbank there.
