Red-necked Grebe averages just one or two records a year in the whole of Highland region, so pretty rare. Slavonian and Little Grebes are both regular at that site however. -

Is 2021 a good pine-cone year on Speyside or a poor one?
All just guesswork I'm afraid. They are about, but not that easy to locate at the moment for sure. -
Capers in the Scottish Highlands 26 April - 1 May 2021
One theory is when numbers are low and it doesn’t find other male Capers to join in a lek, so diverts it’s energy to this behaviour on anything it sees. Or possibly just genetic, a product of inbreeding perhaps which again is happening as numbers are low. Whatever it’s regularly seen, not just...- jpoyner

I agree, especially as in August it's going to be absolutely heaving with slow moving Campers. You really need some decent time on Iona also. I'd base on Mull/Oban to do Iona in a day definitely. -

Only for reasons such as family or business I'd think. There are still some big gaps in data which are needed, 1. How long does the vaccine actually remain effective, 2) How much does it reduce transmission as you can still carry Covid. Until these are known I can't see things changing much.- jpoyner

Realistically, after recent announcements I can't see the international travel market opening up at all in 2021 sadly. Quarantine is going to remain in place for a long time as nobody knows yet how much the vaccine reduces transmission. Sad times and they probably won't be the last. I can't even...- jpoyner

Holiday lets
Always a difficult question as depends on what you really want to see. Everyone comes spring though that is the hardest time to see Crested Tits for example which are far easier in late autumn winter. Long summer days can make looking for Eagles harder, far easier again in winter with shorter... -

Currently only one household/family are allowed in self catering accommodation anywhere in Scotland even in tier one areas such as Highland and not sure I can see this changing by Xmas. As it stands any non-essential travel across the border is illegal under updated restrictions last week so... -

Crossbills of any description seem few and far between at the moment here. I've had some Commons in Spruce but not many cones on the Scots Pine. Not much help really but outside of the breeding season they range widely and always just a matter of luck. -
