    Devon Birding

Good morning Andrew, Saw it at 1:45 yesterday and it was reported at again at about 5 PM. Note that the road from Sandford to Kennerleigh is closed, but is clear as far as Ashridge Farm. Park on the hard stand just before the farm buildings, then follow the track on the right for a couple of...

    Italian hot spot

Fantastic pictures Carlo, I will be working just south of Milano next year (near Lodi). Can you tell us how to get to these places? Best regards Ken.

    FYI Torrevieja Costa Blanca

Hi Darren, The salinas at Santa Pola, just up the road from Torrevieja are excellent - Audouin's Gull, Collared Pratincole, Marbled duck, etc. Also El Hondo, but you have to book to get in as it's on private land I believe. It's worth a drive around the outskirts there, I've had brilliant views...

    Devon Birding

Have a look at this site - you'd be surprised what the Exe estaury turns up! http://www.dawlishwarren.co.uk/ Or this one - http://www.wildlifeindevon.org.uk/index.html - and Joe Ray's (see link on his posts) for Devon in general. Good birding Ken.

Need help with a finch or finch-like bird

Hi Tickwood, This is an exotic (from SE Asia) that has been kept in captivity for many years, known as Nutmeg Mannikin, Spice Finch and several other names. It's established itself in the wild in a few places where it's escaped or been set loose. Enjoy a taste of the orient! Good birding Ken.

    Hearing aids

Hi John, My hearing has been deteriorating for some years now - it's hereditary, my mother's side of the family all suffered too. I've used a hearing aid (a national health one - can't comment on the digital jobbies) but find that it amplifies all sound, so the frequencies that I have trouble...

    unidentified bird brean down somerset

Don't you just love escapes?:eek!: I've been scouring my own literature and the 'net for different weaver/whydah species, most photos I've found though are of more colourful breeding plumage males. The striking super should narrow it down and the only two I've found so far have been Pin-tailed...

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Reading past posts Gav, I thought the secret was to have (lots of) donuts for lunch? Good birding Ken.

    Cornwall Birding

Paul, We had an interesting discussion (well more like panic actually) when news of this bird came out. What would access be like at Walmsley in case of a mega like this? Is it not CBWPS only access? Good birding Ken.

    Plymouth-Santander ferry (tommorow)

Hi Tom, The seawatching off the Devon coast has been exceptional just recently and stuff is still getting picked up, so don't wait till the Bay of Biscay before you get your bins out. Have a look at the recent sightings from Dawlish Warren. (They're all heading in the direction of Plymouth!)...

Nah! A mullet angler is a fisherman with a funny haircut, surely.

    Devon Birding

Hi Joe, The Little Crake has moved a short distance and is now beside the Anglers' car park (right by the canal). It was showing extremely well at about 5 PM from the bridge across the ditch looking towards Turf. So, keep nagging your parents!!! Good birding Ken.

Joanne, It's from "Proverbs of Hell" Paul, Always said oo-sul myself, but there may be a bit of "Devonshire" pronunciation in there. All the best Ken.

    how do you pronounce "chough"?

Hi Joanne, Not a great reader myself these days -always too much else to do it seems. I picked the signature because I liked it and it seemed appropriate for a bird forum! All the best Ken.

    how do you pronounce "chough"?

O.K. - How do you pronounce Sabine's? Saa-bine's or Say-bines. The BBC have used both. The last time I asked this question, I was told Kittiwake! Regards Ken.

    Alicante, Easter

Hi James, Drive up the N332 towards Alicante and you'll pass the salinas at Santa Pola - Audouins and Slender-billed Gull, Purple Heron. Southwards to San Pedro del Pinatar, there are salinas also, but not the same number of birds as Santa Pola. Very nice beach if you need to "dump" the family...

    Devon Birding

Hi Reg, Take the B3212 from Mortonhampstead towards Postbridge. Follow this road till you get out on the moor proper. about 5 miles or so (I guess!) from Morton, you will pass a pub on the Right - this is the Warren House Inn. I drove past about 100 yards and parked in the Layby on the right...

    Devon Birding

Hi Joe, It was still there this afternoon, but viewing was difficult due to the patch of water it was on being partially obscured by trees and sundry undergrowth! If you park by the swing bridge at Countess Wear, walk down the canal on the left hand side and stay on the canal footpath till you...

    Hampshire

Hi Nev, Sorry you missed the eagle - it was me who got the phone call there by the way, so nice to meet you. The bird was reported yesterday over Quarley Hill again at 3:15. I was told by one of the locals that he sees it fairly regularly coming out of the roost in the copse just below Quarley...
