    Ospreys at Cragside

A work colleague of mine told me today that there are two Ospreys at Cragside in Northumberland. They have been there for about a week now. He said that they stop off on their way to their breeding grounds and will be away by the end of the month. The last time he saw them was last Thursday...

    Jumping Spider

Hello all, took these two pictures with my mobile of a reasonably large jumping spider. Any ideas the type? Unfortunately, it kept moving and I couldn't get a very sharp shot. It is on a Vriesia/Guzmannia house plant bromeliad. Steve.

    Interesting flower

This lone plant of annual Honesty (Lunaria annua) I saw today in a garden had a very distinctive bi-coloured flower. I might try and get seed to see if it comes true. Steve.

    Ident of LBJ please

This Warbler must have flown into the greenhouse glass at the garden centre where I work in Northumberland this morning. Myself and a colleague picked it up and waited until it came round and happily flew off (not before taking a few pics with mobile phone). I presume its some sort of Sylvia...

    Blackbird anting?

I have finally discovered the identity of the culprit digging holes into my gravel path! This female/young? Blackbird was catching ants and appeared to be eating them in quick sucession and then contorting into various poses as they swarmed over the feathers. I don't know whether the ants were...

    Clytis arietus

I have seen this little critter a few times over the years and have always shown it people who are usually amazed that I am not being stung. Someone had a camera at work (where I came across it) but it never stopped moving, hence the blurred image. Just thought people might like to see it...

    Displaying flies

I could not get close enough before they moved but managed to catch some shots of flies that were displaying with their wings to one another on and around a small pond (no fish) in parents garden. I have heard of picture-wing flies though these seemed quite big, around 1cm in length. They had no...

    Identity of Oz bird

Perhaps someone out there knows what this wrongly identified bird is and might pass it on to the website. Havn't a clue myself though I do know it is no Australian Raven. http://plodplodplod.blogspot.com/2006/01/australian-raven.html Steve.

    Cucullia verbasci

I noticed some very handsome caterpillars on some Verbascum flower spikes today (I work in a local garden centre) and thought that they looked a bit like Swallowtails (Papilio)...... Upon further investigation I found the foodplant to be incorrect (should be a certain Umbellifer) and upon...
