    Crow Confusion

I am amazed you don't see much difference! Look at the difference in the length of the legs and the size of the feet -- this is not just a matter of stance. Body size and shape and the position of the eyes differ greatly as well. The only similarity is that they are both black. Perhaps I have...

    Crow Confusion

Would anyone like to comment on the species of crows in the attached photo? The one on the bottom was photographed in Pennsylvania and is clearly an American crow. The one on the top was photographed just south of Lincoln City, Oregon, well outside of the range of the northwestern crow. Hard to...

    Juvenile Trumpeter Swan?

Thanks everyone. The consensus is disappointing, but I would much rather have an accurate ID. I think the pale spot in front of the eyes is the more convincing argument. Gary

    Juvenile Trumpeter Swan?

Attached is a photograph of a swan I took at the Montezuma NWR in New York last week that I believe is a juvenile trumpeter. I would be interested in some other opinions, especially from someone who has experience with both species. I have photographed tundra swans at other times, and I am...

    Northern Shrike

The lighting was abominable when I took this, but I thought it came out reasonably well, especially considering you don't get a chance to photograph one of these every day.

    Pine siskin

Normally, we only see a couple of these at a time and then mostly in the fall and spring. This winter (2008-2009) flocks of up to a hundred are showing up all over the state of Pennsylvania and staying.

I found you can get better definition by changing the ISO from auto to 80 and underexposing by a third of a stop. I also use a monopod because of the slower shutter speeds. Automatic image stabilization is very good, but it has limitations.

Comment by 'GaryT' in media 'Birch Tree Camo'

In Pennsylvania hunters are required to wear orange somewhere on their persons in hunting season, so an orange/red hat when dressed in camo would not be unexpected.
