Thanks Richard! I used a 20 year old guide book, so I'll need to check the current common name.

    Birding Guide to Orkney

My latest book "Birding Guide to Orkney" is now available! It comes in two print editions, one in colour and an inexpensive B&W edition. There is also a Kindle edition. If you wonder how a Canadian writes an Orkney Birding Guide, it is because my wife is Orcadian and we have spent a lot of time...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

OK, I suspect there is more to this story |^| Actually I'm not sure where I got it. I downloaded it from the web to save from typing it myself, and except for the Least Sandpiper, it looked complete and accurate. I've looked for it just now and can't relocate it. Thanks for the help Andrew!!

Birding Santa Rosa NP in February

I agree with the other comments, if you can't get to Santa Rosa as early as possible, then you are losing the best of it. I always try to get there at dawn and by mid morning it is much quieter.

    How to photograph Fireworks

I did a bit of study and experiment to work out good methods to photograph fireworks and tried them at our local Canada Day celebrations. With the U.S. July 4th coming up, I thought I would put some of this information in a short post. How to Photograph Fireworks I hope this is not too far...

    Condensation problem with 300 2.8

Michael, can you tell me which Camera body you were using? The reason for my question is I find that the Canon 5d2 is not very good in wet conditions, although it is marketed as better than the original 5d in this regard. Thanks

    External hard drive.

And if you have a backup in another place, you won't have to. I guess it comes down to how meaningful your images are to you, and if there not that valuable to you, I certainly can see that you would not be too concerned with protecting them.

    External hard drive.

My point was that external HD are notorious for failing. I've had three go bad over the years. I actually don't agree with your idea that it is good to "keep a copy on both my external hard drive AND my PC". You could have a virus which infects them both. You could also have a fire or theft and...

    External hard drive.

Henry, just a note on External Harddrives. Don't keep your only copies of files on them, make sure you have duplicates on another drive or offline. They have a high failure rate. Ideally have at least two externals which mirror each other and keep one offline. Cheers,Harold

The old chestnut again - Raw or jpeg.

An additional reason for shooting RAW is that you may learn some processing technique later that will need RAW files. As an example, single file HDR processing is best with RAW files. I have some landscape images from Tierra del Fuego I wish I had shot in RAW because I would like to process...

I agree with Ken. Sending them a hefty invoice may get there attention. Otherwise you may need to send a take down to their service provider.

    Intersex Mallard

Thanks to everyone who has replied. After some research, I believe this is a female Mallard with male characteristics (intersex). Joseph Morlan has kindly sent me a couple of links on it. http://fog.ccsf.edu/~jmorlan/feb00.htm http://users.utu.fi/hlehto/photo/color/anapla_koirasnaaras.shtml

    Intersex Mallard

You could be right but I'm not sure. As I mentioned hybrid with Am. Black Duck are not unusual there. I don't see any plumage details which are not Mallard though and this is why I wondered about a possible intersex bird.

    Intersex Mallard

What is your opinion of this bird? It has characteristics of both sexes for Mallard. It is also in an area which has a lot of hybrid MallardXBlack Duck. Thanks

    HDR Lite

I have been working on a project that requires a lot of dynamic range which is a natural for HDR processing. The final result couldn't show any of the results of this processing, no artifacts, oversaturation or low contrast. I'm happy with the procedure I ended up using and have a tutorial on...
