Very short report Northern Germany 18/4/24 - 19/4/24

My briefest Vacational Trip Report ever...............in fact I travelled to Deutschland to go to what I believe is the biggest bird park in the world (I stand to be corrected) - Walsrode Vogel Park. The purpose was to see exotic species that personally, I will never be able to see in their...

    Italia Exotica, 29 March-3 April.

Seen the Leiothrix's in Barcelona - absolutely stunning little critters! Would like to see the Bobwhite's - I bet they are usually difficult though.

Are there Red Kites near Stansted Airport?

Attached is the E-Bird map showing Red Kites sightings around Stansted Airport. You can see the runway above the big red marker in the middle. A string of sightings have been seen north and south of it as you can see, from the M11. The area is not the main area for Red Kites, but they are seen...

Do you count heard only birds on your life list?

How do you know birds calling are not recordings? Best bird I heard and not saw was a Desert Owl in Israel - not counting that though on my life list - got to have seen it. In fact I was more likely to count a freshly-dead and limp Nubian Nightjar than anything ' only heard'. Each to their own...

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

Thx Simmo. So presumably you can virtually drive up to (but not past) the Sous-Massa Ecomuseum? No sign at Souss Massa of all the guides trying to charge you for access, which is good news. I do wonder whether Desert Sparrow and African Desert Warbler can be found independently in Merzouga?

Brilliant, as I am dedicating the whole day if necessary, to them, I should connect. Thank you!

Morocco again! Guelmim, Agadir and Oukaimeden

It seems quite common for Morocco to induce illness :)-. How easy were the Tchagra's Simmo? Did you get harassed at Sous- Massa to pay an entrance fee? I'm going from Brum-Agadir in April, 2 nights accommodation and car hire coming to £190 in all, just for the Tchagra's at Sous-Massa...

    Brief Evening at Wicken Fen

Hi Evan Yes I've often battled to discover the best spot to watch the Hen Harriers there. Its often a bit better when there is a bit of a breeze as they fly around more before dropping in to roost. Obviously it varies each time somewhat as they are entirely unpredictable. The gorgeous males...

    Brief Evening at Wicken Fen

Love Wicken Fen. Try and get there once a winter to see the hen harriers. You probably need to go to Burwell Fen for the Short eared Owls and Little Owl by the farm.

ID please goshawk or sparrowhawk? october 30th north-east Italy

If it was a male Goshawk, and the bird in question is an adult, then its face would be striking like on this individual below.........wouldn't it? Even accounting for individual variation, I don't see adult male facial markings. Maybe the light is playing tricks on the OP photo.

ID please goshawk or sparrowhawk? october 30th north-east Italy

If picture 1 shows a possible adult male Gos, shouldn't it have a blue patch behind the eye, rather than such an open-looking face? But its hard to tell, with light playing tricks.

ID please goshawk or sparrowhawk? october 30th north-east Italy

It is tricky mate, really tricky. It could be either as others highlight. It just smacked of Sprawk to me but there are way better birders than myself (:-. Hope it gets a consensus.

    Really stupid ebird question

Not sure that matters Owene. I don't have an e-bird life list. Have you got an account, i.e. have you signed in? Its free.

    Really stupid ebird question

Hi Owene Once you have logged in, follow the following steps: - 1. Select 'Explore' from top navigation bar 2. Scroll down the page and select 'Target species' 3. Type in 'Canarias' where it asks for 'region' (that is the only not obvious bit) 4. Then select 'Show Target Species' 5. Scroll...

    Birding Nene Washes

Yeah Id say Ouse Washes and WWT Welney - that general area - are probably better for masses of Whoopers and some Bewicks. There is waterfowl viewable from Eldernell especially away to the right but you need a scope.

    Birding Nene Washes

Eldernell is the best place - go east from Whittlesey along A605 through Eastrea and Coates - a total of only a mile or two at most from Whittlesey - and turn left off A605 where you see a tractor factory on your left - this leads to a small car park at the end, just over a small bridge. I don't...
