    Chiffchaff song Leeds

Hi, I'm sure this is just a straightforward common chiffchaff but it did sound a little out of tune. It is fairly quiet and drowned out somewhat by the blackcap. Thanks.

Morning call in the dark. East Leeds. UK

Hi all, what could I be hearing in my location and at this time of year? The nearest description I can come up with is that it sounds like a scops owl. It was heard in farmland with the odd tree and a nearby wood. Today was the second weekend running that I've heard it but unfortunately I don't...

    A different screw problem

Hi, my Discovery bins had a problem with one of the screw down eye cups last night. It had become unstable and then came off, on closer inspection one of the tiny grub screws used for stability of the eye cup had come free and lost. So all I need is another of these screws but I don't know the...

    Bird calls, Leeds, UK

Hi all, I'm probably missing something simple but I heard three birds calling this morning. They were all above head height in separate trees at the edge of a scrubby area of woodland. It was quite a dark area due to the foliage and the sun being quite low in the sky. I could not see any of them...

    Chiffchaff song, Leeds, UK.

Hi, I'm sure this will be a bog standard chiffy but this song sounded a little different from all the others this morning. Of all the comparisons (from Xeno Canto) I have heard only one that sounded similar. The bird was obscured by foliage before it flew deeper into cover.

    Feather, Leeds Uk (poor photo)

Hi, could anyone ID the feather in the following picture? Found in a field close to Leeds-Bradford airport by my friends young daughter. Apologies for poor quality (mobile phone camera) but the size can be worked out as it's in my hand and the colour is pretty much as it appears but a little bit...

    A bit of a twitch

It's something I don't like to do (twitching) but having two rare bird species in Leeds got me on my bike this morning. One of them I'd been close to while being unaware of on Saturday. A collared pratincole was reported on the internet but I had already been and gone before I found out about...

    Evening dog walk

Yesterday I decided to try and find some new arrivals on the local patch having seen a swallow fly past the gym. For the most part it was very cloudy and threatened rain but the rain held off thankfully but didn't do anything for the light. The first clue was the song of either blackcap or...

    Morning dog walk.

I rarely start threads but thought I would today. Taking advantage of the only decent day forecasted this week (good to know it's my week off and the usual breakdown in weather) I decided on a slightly different route to the usual. This morning I took in the golf course and was rewarded by a...

Bright part of a miserable day.

Due to the bad forecast for today's weather I got myself out early with the dogs. Seemed far too gloomy even for the birds with not much seen properly due to the lack of good light, a couple of kestrels and a sparrowhawk were looking the best of a disappointing hour and a half. However, after...

    Anyone noticed a difference?

Since the spell of lousy weather this past month I've noticed a big drop in bird numbers in my patch. The only birds that seem unaffected are woodpigeons. (If the Human race was to disappear I reckon they'd take over) Usually I can expect to see 20-30 blackbirds during a dog walk, the last...

    Re bird feeders

Hi all, I have a seed feeder from the RSPB with two of the feeder port perches that have broken off. I would like to replace these with the ring shaped perches and see no need to buy a new feeder. Does anyone know if these rings can be bought on their own? Thanks, Chris.

    Lost out on lifers.

Having hoped that the great white egret would remain in the Lower Aire Valley long enough to be seen, (which it did) my body decided to succumb to something akin to gastric flu. I'd gone to bed Saturday night with plans to get on my bike the next day to see it but the aches and pains that came...

Slow but good progress to my list.

This weekend has seen only four additions but I've finally got a waxwing to smile about. It's only the second time I've seen one and that's about nine years since the first. Having said that it's all dog walks and bike rides as usual so 64 is not too bad and there have been a couple of maybes...

Cold and filthy but at last..

After many possible sightings of great spotted woodpeckers I can finally add this bird to my life list. I've heard them many times before and caught the odd glimpse of something but today with a little patience and knowing a good place to look I've done it. There's a house in a private woodland...

    Magnificent Frigatebird

Maybe another sign of the crazy weather we're having but the appearance of one of these birds makes you wonder what is going on. Unfortunately the poor bird died at Chester Zoo. Even so there were people wanting to get a look at it, thankfully the zoo kept it out of the spotlight allowing it to...

    Cycle in the woods.

Sorry for pinching the line Liebchen but today I passed through the Parlington Estate near Aberford. I'd been hoping to see Nuthatches and Woodpeckers, though not a sniff. However as I was leaving the estate, heading toward the golf course I stopped to watch a Kestrel and noticed something large...

    Marsh and Willow Tits.

A short distance from where I live it is possible to see Willow Tits, I'm now beginning to wonder if there are also Marsh Tits. I've managed to identify the Willows by their calls but recently there have been other Willow like tits with a slight difference, that being a call which sounds like a...
