    juv. Rosy-Finch, Dillon, Colorado, USA

After viewing photos on the web, I am leaning towards brown-capped. Still uncertain about how long juv. plumages stay on these species. May seems late. This may have been an adult female Brown-capped. There were no signs of gray in the head. Still looking for a good photo compare on the web...

    juv. Rosy-Finch, Dillon, Colorado, USA

Sorry no photo. Seen today at very close range through window glass. Tawny brown all over, no streaks at all; faint cinammon wing-bars; yellowish bill with strong white bar where upper mandible joins head (don't know the name for that). I am thinking Gray-crowned Rosy-Finch juvenile based on...

I recommend planing an entire day at Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. You'll get a good day list out of it.

    Kowa 612, what new eyepiece?

I have an old Kowa 612. I use the 20w eye piece that came with it and like it. I would like to buy one of the new generation eye pieces, particularly interested in the 30w. Is it compatible for mounting, first of all? And 2nd, anyone with experience of the Kowa 61X series using that eye...

    Birding news from Hungary

Where was the Wallcreeper? Cliffs along the Danube Bend? The face of the temple at Esztergom? I lived in Hungary for 2 years (2006-2008) and met some great birders there who were so generous and knowledgeable. Do you know Ungi Balázs? What a great guy. Thanks for this post of news from...

Recommend me a $200-$300 set of Porros!

I'll add to Bob's laconic recommendation for the Swift Audubon 8.5x44 porros. I have had them for over 4 years and lots of hours in the field. I have tried a large variety of porros. I think these are the best in the price range. The optical quality and field-of-view are excellent. They...

Sandpiper. Delaware, USA. May 6, 2008

Yes, Wood Sandpiper. It has been put out on the net as such since yesterday afternoon through the DE-birds list-serv. It should travel up into other rare-bird networks quickly. The bird has remained for at least 2 days on the right-side impoundment along Broadkill Beach Road (heading...

Sandpiper. Delaware, USA. May 6, 2008

This was found by a friend at Prime Hook NWR. Many locals have seen the bird now and an ID has been made and generally accepted. I agree with it. But, I ask BF members to confirm/comment. Thanks!

    Conquests: Made in Germany?

Paul, I have to take issue with what you are saying. I do not own the Conquests. I have tried them and think they are mediocre, but not because of where they are made. However, that is not my point. I am living in Hungary. A couple years ago I had a conversation with a Zeiss representative...

    Which American State?

I agree completely with Robert. But, Joanne's idea of Monterey, CA and around is also good. I have been there myself, so let me talk about it. Monterey is a first-rate town to visit in it's own right, as well as great birding and sea-life watching. Just a short distance inland and the...

    Hawk? Central NY

Maybe a Brant? Tail and body size are right, could be the dark line at the front of the bird is the beginning of the dark breast. Head might be hidden by the angle. Brant necks are quite short for a goose. The picture is so unclear, creating strange effects. The wings seem to be attached at...

    Need Help!

Have you considered 1st year Baltimore Oriole (formerly Northern Oriole)? Probably female judging by the amount of whitish feathers on the breast.

    ID help - Louisiana

I agree with Juv. Cattle Egret. Let us simply look at bill length and thickness in ratio to head size. There is a wealth of other field marks too. But this should suffice to rule out the other egrets mentioned.

    Bird Id Vermont USA 9/9/07

If Phoebe, how do you explain the bold white eye ring? What about the strong buffy wing-bar typical of a first year Empidonax? Or the characteristic bolt upright posture of an empid? Also, is not the eye too big to head size for the larger Empids, let alone the even larger Phoebe? Is face...

    new generation Kowa eyepieces

Timedrifter, Thanks for this. I am really considering the 20x now that you have told me this. I use 20x most of the time for scanning and most IDs, probably it is time to replace my old one. Very glad about the great eye relief AND wide angle. Finally! I am not really into digiscoping, but...

Yellow Legged Gull 1cy? - ID confirmation please, Bucharest, Romania

You have to consider the new Caspain Gull, formerly the Yellow-legged subspecies cachinnans. The split was made after publication of most current field guides. On this flying Juv., I cannot venture a guess. Someone with more experience can probably tell it for sure.

    Birdwatching exams

Might work in Britain where young males predominate in the birding community. Moreover you have a very small island and there could be a standardized test which would indeed apply to all. :-C In the USA, we have a huge area with great differences between regions in what is common. Would...

Palm Warbler and Pine Warbler are late migrants which almost overwinter. Same with Orange-crowned Warbler, though it is much more rare.
