    Common frog uk

I’ve had a small garden pond for many years and frogs have always returned every spring to produce plenty of frogspawn. This year there’s no sign of them and I know they are mating locally elsewhere ( I’m in East Cheshire ). Hopefully, they’ll turn up soon, but is anyone else experiencing the same ?

Sequoia planting scheme in the uk

Just watched an article on tv about this . The main aim is carbon capture from the atmosphere as the trees grow to huge heights and particularly rapidly. Fabulous trees that I’ve had the privilege to see out in their native home in western America. We also have them in a number of our parks and...

    Bats using hummingbird feeder

I know pretty much zilch regarding bats , hence this post. I clicked onto one of the Cornell bird cams this morning forgetting it would still be dark over there ! Anyway, it was the Panama fruit feeder one, and I was surprised to see that there were bats flying around and occasionally stopping...

    Ruddy ducks

Are there any left ? Not asking for any information of their whereabouts just curious if they're still hanging on. Saw 1 ( well known ) drake last year ,none the year before.Last official figure I could find was 40 birds left in 2016.

    Gambia ?

Earlier this evening there was a thread about Gambia but it seems to have vanished ?? I suspect it was because some comments were a bit over the top , and I think someone said it should be conducted on" ruffled feathers" below. I just tried to access that section but had access denied ! I...

Tendaba, Gambia - day trip ?

Hi. We are returning to The Gambia in Jan. and I'd like to try for the special birds on the Tendaba river trip ( finfoot etc) . My wife won't entertain staying overnight at Tendaba camp , so is it viable to do it as a day trip from the coast ? And still have a chance with the trip across the...

    Bird guide recommendation

Just back from 2 weeks in the Gambia. Had booked a well known guide (based on recommendations on here ) but he let us down -didn't even turn up to our hotel for the arranged first meeting. However , after ringing him up ,he sent Mustafa Manneh ([email protected]) instead and we had a really...

    Gambia 2012/13 season

I'm off to The Gambia in mid January for the first time. As we're now well into the winter birding season I wondered if returning birders could post any of their more noteworthy sightings on here. Not after any complete trip reports , just odds and sods of interest. Did the same for Goa last...

    Boavista, Cape Verde, November 5th-12th

Just returned from a trip to Boavista ,which I can recommend for some winter sun with ( a few ) interesting birds to see. This was not really a trip targetting birds ( I was with the wife, for a start !) but it's easy to see what's there just by pootling about for a few walks within a mile or...

Gambia - a couple of questions....

Off to Gambia for the first time, in mid January, staying on the coast for 2 weeks. What about the guys at the Birdfair Gambian...

    Birding smartphone advice

Hi. I'm a bit of a dinosaur looking for advice/recommendations for smartphones and birding. Goa update ?

Was wondering if anyone's been out there recently? We're going back ,in just over a month,to the Baga/Arpora area and would love to know any up-to-date info. We failed on the pitta last time ( tried Arpora woods and Fort Aguada, but not the "shitta" site !). Also ,we were unable to access Baga...

    Indian spotted eagle

Last November while on a trip to Goa, we saw a "Greater spotted eagle " flying over a local marsh. At least , that's what the bird guide who accompanied us called it , and as my field guide (Grimmett & Inskipp) also uses that name ,I thought no more of it until today. However I today came across...

World 24 hour list record ?

Had a quick trawl on the Net but not at all sure of the results I found. Does anyone know what the world record is for number of species in 24 hours ? Surfbirds seems to have a record of 900+ somewhere in South America - is this possible ? cheers, Bill.

Cape Verde on a package tour

Am thinking of booking an all-inclusive package to Cape Verde for some winter sun. The two possibilities seem to be either Sal or Boavista and I know these islands have a pretty limited number of the Cape Verde endemics and other species. I was wondering how practical (and expensive !) it...

    Akumal , Yucatan Jan 18th - 31st 2011

Having visited the Playacar resort of Yucatan last year, I returned but based myself further down the Riviera Maya at Akumal. This turned out to be an excellent decision bird-wise and I thought it worth posting my trip here for anyone with a non-birding partner who will be restricted to one...

    Bird guide Riviera Maya Mexico

Off to this part of Mexico next month and wondered if anyone has contact details for a good guide ? I've tried the net but had no response from my e-mail attempt. I know about Luis Ku in Puerto Morelos.I'm sure he's very good, but when I contacted him last time I visited, I found his charges...

    Spangled Drongo

Just got back from a trip to Goa where I saw spangled drongo . Compiling my list since I got home I noticed I'd seen spangled drongo in Australia last year, but closer inspection of the Latin names revealed they are different birds !(the tails are very different anyway ) .Now ,obviously different...

    Goa taxi recommendations

Off to Goa with the wife ,staying at the Marinha Dourada from Nov 2nd. By the way, if anyone...

Mealworms - are they worth the cost ?

Am posting this for advice , really. After many years of feeding my garden birds , I bought some dead mealworms .They certainly aren't cheap compared to fatballs, seed ,peanuts etc. Anyway, despite trying various feeders, trays and just scattering on the ground, I've found the only birds that take...

    Crocodile Island, Luxor, Jan 2008

Spent an excellent week ( 23rd to 30th January ) at the Jolieville Hotel . Hastle-free birding in the company of one or two other guests ( cheers , Neil ! ) made this a trip to be recommended , especially if you have non-birding companions. Most of the birds listed were seen daily and all on the...
