    Little Owls.

For the past few weeks, two Little Owls (Athene noctua) have been in the garden in broad daylight, morning and evening, mainly perching on the tennis court supports but also in the apple and pear trees. This evening for the first time this year, two youngsters appeared, still fluffy, but well...

    Plustek Slide Scanner

I have recently purchased a Plustek 7500 i AI slide scanner. I decided it was about time I transferred all my Kodachromes to digital. Having processed the images they seem very sharp. However when I save the images as TIFF files and open them in Photoshop the definition drops dramatically. Any...

Canon 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS lenses. Some observations

Having aquired both these lenses for my 40D, I thought I would very amateurishly compare them with my older lenses. Simply placed the camera on a tripod and shot a view of the garden through and open window. ISO 200, cable release. Compared resolution on my computer screen. At full aperture and...

    Which review on DSLRs

Has anyone read the June edition of Which Magazine and their reviews on DSLRs? In a comparison with twelve other cameras they rate the Canon 350D as Best Buy, with the 30D in third place and the 400D a lowly eleventh. I have both the 350D and 400D and rate the 400D better than the 350D but only...

    First Nest of the Year

The Blue Tits and Great Tits have been investigating the bird boxes for several weeks now, however, today I discovered a pair of Robins have built a nest above the lintel in one of the open sheds at the top of the garden.

    Blackcap

Looked out of the bedroom window at lunch time and there was a male Blackcap in one of the apple trees. This is the first time I have ever seen a Blackcap in the garden.

    Portable Storage Devices.

I am looking for a portable storage device to unload photos from my Canon 400D on a visit to Morocco this spring. I have found three, though there may be others which are suitable. They are Epson P-3000, Vosonic VP8360 and Jobo Giga-Vu Evolution. Any comments would be appreciated.

    Canon 400D photo numbering.

I have recently bought a Canon 400D to accompany by 350D. I deleted the contents of one of my Compact Flash Cards (which I had used in my 350D) on my computer and then formatted it on the 400D. As is supposed to happen the photos I have taken with the 400D are numbered 0001 upwards as expected...

    Fledgling Little Owl

Got woken up rather early this morning (0630) by someone rough shooting. On looking out of the window there was a fledgling Little Owl sitting on the gate to the tennis court being fed by an adult. I have seen an adult early morning and early evening for the past few weeks, this is the first...

    Nesting Boxes

Last weekend I took down my five nesting boxes to give them a good scrub and to disinfect them (There has been no sign of any birds overwintering in them). Three of them had nests last year, two Great Tits and one Blue Tit. This morning I put them up again, within five minutes a Blue Tit was...

    The Little Owls are back

When we moved in 1996 from Scotland to a small village in South Cambridgeshire we were delighted to find a family of Little Owls in the garden. Each spring until 2004 a pair nested in one of the old apple trees in the orchard. In early spring we would frequently see one of the adults perched on...

    Canon Restrictive Practice-Do You Agree?

Canon have recently issued a directive about importing Canon equipment into the European Economic Area (see http://www.canon.co.uk/about_us/news/corporate_releases/2006_trademark_infringement.asp). They are typically targetting what they call grey imports from the USA and Hong Kong. Do you think...

    Long Focus Zooms.

As a complete newcomer I posted this question in the wrong forum. I hope I have it in the correct place I am completely new to this forum, and do not yet know how to navigate it. The question I am asking has probably been 'done to death' before. I have recently had a holiday in South Africa...

    Long focus zoom lenses

I am completely new to this forum, and do not yet know how to navigate it. The question I am asking has probably been 'done to death' before. I have recently had a holiday in South Africa, where my animal photos are pretty good, but my bird photos abysmal except for ostriches and a couple of...
