    Mystery Gull

I saw this gull several weeks ago on the beach just south of St Augustine, Fl. It appears to be a Ring-billed Gull, but not quite right. I thought maybe a hybrid but the only east coast record of a hybrid RB Gull was with a Laughing Gull but I don't see any Laughing Gull traits on this bird. I...

    Waterthrush - east Texas

I have just this one photo and am not sure if it can be identified from this view. The dappled sunlight doesn't help much either. Anyway, I thought it could be Louisiana based on leg color and what appears to me to be a thicker supercilium in the back. Thanks for any help,

    Empidonax in East Texas, US

Photos taken April 9, 2018 in High Island Texas. Bird was active (but silent |8(| ). My best guess is Acadian, but wouldn't bet a nickel. Thanks for any help

Another one from the Capertee Valley

And one more. I believe this might be a Dollarbird but the leg color appears wrong. Thanks again,

    Capertee Valley, Australia

Attached are photos of three birds from the Capertee Valley we couldn't identify on a recent trip. Photos taken mid March. The first is a Raven, but can it be determined if it is an Australian or a Little Raven? I have no idea what the second bird is. The third bird might be a Striped...

    Cairns, Australia

I believe this is a Gray-tailed Tattler. Hope to rule out Wandering Tattler. Appreciate confirmation or correction.

Galapagos Islands, Santa Cruz, Darwin's finches

I could use some help on clarifying two sightings on Santa Cruz from July 30 this year. The first bird was "called" as a Cactus Finch but I have my doubts (feeding on seeds seemed out of place for one and bill looks to small). This photo is labeled "Finch". The second bird (4 photos labeled...

    "flagged" Red Knots in Trinidad

For the last week we've had a dozen Red Knots on the mudflats at Orange Valley. We managed to get flag numbers on 4 of the 5 "flagged" birds in the group and with help from the below mentioned have identified the individuals and their "original flagging" location and resightings. Thought y'all...

    Gull ID, Trinidad

Attached are photos taken over the last two days of a gull that is currently visiting. In size and general appearance he is very similar to our LBBG's (Graellsi - usually a small group from 2 to 9 birds year round) but he is considerably darker. It appears to be a 3rd year bird based on the bill...

    Ecuador - San Jorge eco-lodges

Has anyone stayed at any of the three San Jorge eco-lodges (Tandayapa, Milpe, Quito)? Does anyone have any experience with any of the tours they lead? Thanks for any info.

    Great Blue Heron occidentalis

Can anyone summarize the current taxonomy status / definition of Ardea herodias occidentalis? While it was originally considered a separate specie "Great White Heron, Ardea occidentalis", it was later treated as a color morph of the Great Blue Heron. Currently it appears that several groups...

Identification puzzle of young Buteogallus hawks

Posted on behalf of the T&T Rare Bird Committee: The Trinidad & Tobago Rare Birds Committee is appealing for advice from observers familiar with Neotropic raptors. In Trinidad & Tobago, adult raptors are pretty straightforward to identify, but immatures can be extremely difficult for us...

    Possible Caspian Tern - Trinidad

Two large, "red-billed" terns were observed in Trinidad west coast June 29, 2009 in late afternoon low light. Distance was about 240 +/- feet. Optics were an older 60mm scope / shaky tripod so views were less than perfect. These two birds were on the mudflats with a large group of Laughing...

Life out on the limb - A Common Potoo's story

One of my favorite birds is the Potoo. Generally I've seen them at "known" locations but have occassionally looked for and found them. Last week we had one calling just off the balcony where I'm staying and it came in fairly close where we could see it well with a light. I set up my scope and...

Medium sized Tern ID - Trinidad

Following are three photos of two Terns seen in Trinidad earlier this week. The tail length on the first bird seems to rule out Common (the expected mid sized Tern here). Can anyone clarify the ID on these? Thanks,

    Tobago - escaped parrot

Any help with this ID? Obviously an escapee. Thanks,

    Warbler ID - Trinidad

We saw this warbler yesterday in south eastern Trinidad. The closest ID I could come up with is first fall or female Black-throated Blue Warbler but it isn't quite "picture perfect". I didn't notice any white supercillium when watching him in the field and don't see it on the photos. This...

Tobago - Scrub Greenlet or Warbler?

This photo was taken recently in Tobago by a friend. While the coloration and apparent size looked good for Scrub Greenlet, the bill looks a little too long / slender for the Greenlet. Appreciate any confirmation of Greenlet or correction.

    Trinidad - Which Black-Hawk?

Attached are two photos of a Black-Hawk specie seen in Trinidad on Nov 9. While the Common Black-Hawk is certainly the most likely this bird appeared to have a much wider white tail band. Our only views were as in these two photos and one as he flew away (low and mostly headed directly away from...

    Raptor ID, Trinidad

Attached are two photos of a raptor taken today in S.W. Trinidad. I had decent scope views for less than a minute and then decided to hook up my digiscope camera. And of course it flew off just as I missed the shot! Luckily a friend managed a few with his camera. The bird has his back to us with...

Red Knot sighting in Trinidad - banded

Below is a photo of a Red Knot that was sighted on the west coast of Trinidad W.I. on Aug. 13, 2008. A local birder, Tarran Maharaj, found and photographed this bird. I sent the photo to the US Fish and Wildlife Service group that has a shorebird banding program. I had gotten that information...
