winter feeding in ontario starling and blue jays

Nope! Down here in NJ. I have seen the same thing you describe. The starling possey comes in and then AL Capone and the boys(grackles) come in and take over the area.:king: Blue J's just move on they are not interested in fighting.

Problem with Grackles and Cowbirds in NJ

Yes the grackles have been around in flocks. I am also in NJ and I solved the problem your having by switching to safflower seed only in my hopper feeder. I found this trick to work very well. Mostly all the other favorite birds eat it and the grackles occasionally sample it but don't care to...

Do you have a feeder guardian (squirrel cage around bird feeder)?

I have a Duncraft squirrel proof caged feeder on a WBU Abs pole set up w/ stove pipe baffle that was really purchased to keep the starlings and grackels at bay. Squirrels on this system are not a problem. The smaller song birds love the feeder and I'm refilling it every other day. I get titmice...

    Roosting Pockets

Yes, they do use them. I have the exact ones you show. I put 2 under my front porch overhang last year and within a few days one was occupied. It is a house finch that only uses it at night to sleep in. Mostly when it's cold at night. It comes in at dusk and leaves at the first signs of light. I...

Downys and Chickadees - a suet crisis

Very true. I had the same thing happen in my yard, mainly in the colder weather. I have a coopers and a sharp shinned hawk that visits my yard mostly in the early morning and again late in the day. Most birds sense the hawk coming and fly for cover. Most of the time the hawks don't get any birds...

    Is it any wonder

Nice shots KC.:t: I see this everyday. The robins line up for a bath and after that is over the Blue Jays come in and take a bath as well. By that time the bath is empty.:-O

    Pesky Starlings

Thanks alot Mark, looks like a great working setup. Birds never care about how pretty things are as long as there's food to eat. ;) I like the Osier Dogwood info, since Im looking to add some plantings and if I remember correctly they are shrubs not trees which is what I'm looking for...

    which seed is best.

Hi Masey, Happy to hear everything is "A" ok now. Another added bonus is that any that falls to the ground will quickly be eaten up by the ground feeders. Another food I've had great success with is wild delight nut/berry mix. It has a nice mixture and all the birds eat it including the...

    Titmouse behavior question

I was thinking the same thing. I have off and on visits from a Coopers and a Sharp Shinned hawk and most of the time all the birds fly to cover all at once but every so often one or two get caught napping and they freeze in place till the hawks fly away.

    birds nesting early?

I have a mourning dove nesting in the bush outside my living room window. I checked yesterday and mom flew out, there were 2 eggs in the nest which is the normal for doves. I was very surprised since they seem to be about a month early this year. :h?:

what to feed Robins/snow on ground

Just an idea, but our local walmart stores have night crawlers in the fishing dept. that may help. If you have hollies with berries that will suit them just fine. Here in NJ. the robins arrived in huge groups about 3 weeks ago with snow still on the ground and they quickly cleaned all my holly...

    Birds and Storms

I've watched this all winter and it is very true your birdies are the best at predicting a storm or weather change. Leave it to nature. ;)

    Niger seed !

After reading this thread I emailed Cornell Ornithology lab experts to get an opinion and the person actually went and read this post first hand. The reply I got back was as several folks have said here, not to worry, that this seed is just a small portion of the birds diet in the wild. The...

lots of food but no visits?

Just a thought but it is possible there is a hawk staking out your territory. they are not always easy to spot if hidden up in a tall tree. I had times when the birds would be absent for long periods and I learned it was a Coopers and also a Sharp Shinned hawk that was making daily visits to the...

Are Heath Suet Cakes Worth Buying

Dan, I just bought the Heath nutty mix from Petsmart two days ago to try and the woodies and all the regulars seem to enjoy it. I always have used the C&S brand from Walmart but the Heaths were on sale so I figured I'd give it a shot. One thing I noticed was the Heath was a tad slimmer. I will...

Can a feeder's colour affect its popularity?

The best test is to buy a small bag of straight thistle/nyger seed (Walmart) and fill the feeder to just above top feeder hole (depending on size of feeder).Don't do this if it's a super long tube. Start small and see what results you get. I can't keep seed in my thistle feeder (15" long)...

Can a feeder's colour affect its popularity?

I tried different finch blends, Kaytee, Stokes, Wagners and found there was never much interest in the blends mainly fine sunflower chips, canary seed, thistle etc. FWIW I find the straight Nyger/ Thistle seed in a thistle feeder works best for me. I tried the blends in a sock and that drew...

    no birds feeding

I am having the same situation here in U.S. (Southern New Jersey) and it's been cold after having a mild couple months. I have occasional visits by local birds but quick and they're gone. I also were filling the feeders every couple days last winter, but this year has been so much different...

    Baffle or Stovepipe guard?

I have a WBU pole setup w/ stovepipe baffle that has been very effective. The tree rats climb the pole but the baffle stops them. I do not gease the pole, not needed. I have 4 crook arms and have the feeders organized to look nice.;)
