    Best January bird

********* That is awesome. Where were you?? I'd have to say my best bird(s) in January were thousands and thousands of Snow Geese (many blue phase and plenty of Ross') out in Los Banos, CA. The sound of their wingbeats is breath-taking - everytime we looked up, the sky was filled with long...

************* I haven't subscribed yet but I went to the registration page and got the little window up in the corner. I right clicked and it gave me a *zoom in* option and that opened the video to full screen. I don't know if that helps you or not. WMP has a pretty extensive help menu. I'll...

    30+RB Mergansers today!!

I was out at the beach today for low tide - If you looked at a map of CA and saw the indentation for Monterey Bay - I was smack dab in the middle of the bay - half way between Santa Cruz and Monterey- at the mouth of Elkhorn slough. This place is rich with birds, particularly in winter. There...

    Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned Hawk?

[ But as I always say, I suck at photo IDing. :t: You're great with math though - and detail. I read your post a couple times and never stopped scratching my head. The redlining in photoshop - I'd love to learn how to do that!! You're the bomb Katy!

Is Gull watching for experts only?

I live in Santa Cruz and gull identification is a cult here. There are flow charts on the Santa Cruz Bird Club's website and some of these folks go absolutely insane studying gulls, counting windows in the primaries, etc etc. Last time I was on one of these field trips a couple months back, the...

    Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned Hawk?

Can't be sure >>>>>>As I saw the bird sitting from the back, it was mostly gray, long tail, with some bars across the tail. Looks like it would be either Cooper's or Sharp-Shinned?<<<< The two things I notice that help determine this difference are both absent from this photo - the Coopers...

    Swainson's or Redtail?

Folks, this photo is about 2 weeks old and was taken outside Los Banos CA in the San Luis Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. This is the only view I had of this bird- it never moved the whole time I was on him. Most of the varsity birders here have voted Redtail. I'm just curious what anyone else thinks...
