    Birds fae Torry

A pleasant but rather cool evening walk produced one or two interesting things. A Willow Warbler along the north bank was presumably a migrant. Wheatears had arrived with at least five on the golf course. Offshore, good numbers of seabirds were moving and I picked out a Puffin in a larger flock...

    Help with Pipits - UK

Looks well within range for Meadow Pipit to me. I see both species very regularly and the underpart streaking is not normal for Rock. Also, the mantle streaking is very well defined.

Confluence of Mun and Mekong rivers Thailand - some raptor ID ?

Yes, an immature Brahminy Kite. The wing pattern and shape are fairly distinctive.

    Help with Pipits - UK

I can only see Meadow Pipits here.

    Birds fae Torry

Yes to Common Sandpiper. Good to know that they're arriving. All of the pipits are Meadow Pipits except for the one on flotsam, which is a Rock Pipit. The song in the video is a typical Meadow Pipit song.

restaurants where you can bird and eat at the same time

When I was in Evia in Greece recently, on the first evening I was there I was eating outside at a taverna at dusk. As I was about to order food, an Eagle Owl flew right overhead! The next evening, I had good views of a pair on a nearby cliff.

Is this Sardinian warbler or Menteries’s warbler please?

I agree, although the OP is from Iraq rather than Iran so presumably the photo is from there. I don't think Sardinian Warbler normally occurs in Iraq either, where Menetries would be the species expected.

    Birds fae Torry

Back to Torry today, where it was characteristically cold and grey, with regular light rain. Things weren't vastly different from the last time I looked around nearly two weeks ago. The headland was fairly quiet, although a bright male Sparrowhawk caused a lot of consternation among the other...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Just to round things off, here are some notes from yesterday - my final day in Lesvos. There had been fairly substantial rain overnight, which was encouraging. Skala Eresou: I spent most of the morning in Skala Eresou, around the river and in the areas to the west. The first birds I saw were a...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Today was still warm and sunny for the most part, but there were more clouds around. In the middle of the afternoon, I got a noisy warning message on my phone saying that severe storms are likely. Skala Eresou: I began in Skala Eresou. The highlight was a couple of Red-throated Pipits, which...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Catching up a bit. Yesterday, I spent the morning and early afternoon in the Meladia Valley area. Rocky Road: I saw a good range of birds along the road, including a few Cinereous Buntings and Cretzschmar's Buntings, two Masked Shrikes, five Isabelline Wheatears, a Woodlark, and a Whinchat. A...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Today was fairly casual but actually ended up being pretty successful, with lots of good birds. The weather started windy but in most areas I went to, it was relatively light. Sometimes there was warm sunshine, amidst more overcast conditions. Road to Kalloni: I stopped a few times along the...

    Crested Kingfisher - Japan

They certainly occur at Lake Miike, which is a good general place for birding. I saw them there in the winter, and I assume they can be seen throughout the year.

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

The weather turned a bit today, with a strong southeasterly wind most of the time and increasing cloud cover. By the end of the day, it felt quite cool. It was also a bit of a frustrating day (compounded by me locking myself out of my accommodation!) but I did see some good birds. Skala Eresou...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Another warm day in Lesvos, with not too much happening in terms of migration. There were plenty of good birds to be found though. Skala Eresou: I had a fairly good look around early in the morning. Highlights included a Night Heron and a Black Stork along the river and four Short-toed Larks in...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Had a pleasant, fairly easy going first full day in Lesvos. Skala Eresou: Had a wander round early in the morning. Not many migrants in evidence, although plenty of birds were singing. This included a few Nightingales, Great Reed Warblers and a distant Savi's Warbler. A Masked Shrike was also...

    LESVOS BIRD NEWS 2024

Have arrived here for the week for my first ever visit. Haven't done any birding yet, but did see a pair of Laughing Doves outside the shops in Skala Eresou! Will be based in the west of the island, so will generally be looking around there. I'll post what I see on this thread.

    Birds fae Torry

Asking the hard questions there. The Tree Pipit was calling quite a bit, which is fairly distinct from Meadow (much raspier). Also note the fine flank streaks and broken eye ring formed by a dark line between the eye and the bill. Also the toes are relatively short and curved. And it's in a...

    Birds fae Torry

Back to rather grey and cold weather again today. I had a look around early in the evening. Once again, I saw the pair of Grey Partridges on the south side. I actually flushed them from exactly the same area I did the other day and got reasonable views as they flew into the gorse. I wonder what...
