    Black Wheatear near Fuengirola?

Quick enquiry for those of you who might be familiar with birding sites around Fuengirola. I will be there for three days from 16th Feb and am keen to try sound record Black Wheatear, if possible. I gather the species should be displaying at this time of year. I have been looking at a trip to...

    Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone

Hi Peter, A quick reply. Both the Zoom SSH and SGH shotgum microphones are reasonable, but I would think the seenheiser is a much better option. I have been using the SGH for a while as a portable option with the Zoom Hn1, which has been fine. It does not deal well with wind noise, my only...

    Programmable Recorders?

Hi Dave, Hope you are well. For your work with petrels, I'm guessing the Audiomoth is an excellent option for the following reasons. 1. Pre programmable, can be set to record at the same time period on consecutive nights. 2. Battery life is excellent, can be left out for several nights...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

I would expect White billed Diver may well turn up in Sweden in the coming weeks, negating a long trip to Varanger. They may have opportunity to pick up other missed species, American Herring Gull would be foremost among them. It will be an interesting run in to 2018.

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

There's lot's of guinness there too. Would be brave to go back for GCT, wish them luck if they do. Dipping again would be rather painful. The stout would taste a whole lot better if they connect though... Radde's and Dusky Warbler must be top of the list as regards species that ought to be in...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Regardless of what the reasons for cutting Corvo short, the guys are now in the UK and the first target will be the long staying Wilson's Phalarope for starters. Dusky and Radde's Warblers will, no doubt, be high on the list of species they will want to put to bed, Further afield, the incredibly...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Worth noting that November is a month that could prove one of great worth in a WP context. Lingering eastern rarities such as Dusky Warbler likely. Further afield, sites such as Linosa produce eastern rares well into November. A November visit to, say, Kuwait, could throw up several species...

    UK Hawfinch occurence last weekend....?

Quite likely a shortage of food indeed... Also records from Irish south and southeast coasts these past few days, so seems a displacement of some description is taking place..

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Dusky Warbler may well be the next addition, two reported on the Northern Archipelago in Uppland today. Corvo must be an attractive option with so much quality from the west available. Given that several additions are available, further vagrants are likely and that they would avoid long travel...

    2017 Western Palearctic Big Year

Sooty Shearwater and Sabines Gull are dead certs given the conditions forecast. The latter species needs to be dealt with and nailed down. The question is, how long after they get these two species do they look out to sea, given that seabirds are pretty much covered after that, save for an...

Latest from the steppes is Black Lark in the bag(100 plus individuals!) Demoisselle Crane also added, so main targets are now safely on the yearlist and they are free to move on to the next port of call. A methodical, relentless sweep of the WP continues....very impressive.

    Honey buzzard ID

This bird is a juvenile HB, as attested by the fresh retrices and pale tips to secondaries and inner primaries. Identifying juvenile OHB in the west of range is difficult at best, given the extreme variation in EHB alone. An interesting bird nonetheless, lacking carpal patches, with noticeable P6.
