    Eliminate all predators on Earth?

Oh but what about the plants that can hear themselves being eaten? I suppose we'll then eat dust and sand, until someone demonstrates that they, too, have a point of view about being eaten. Then we'll just embrace breatharianism?

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Laughing Kookaburra'

Thank you. This one posed for countless portraits, being rather unperturbed by the constant stream of people on the path right next to it. The only things competing for attention were four humpback whales and a pod of about fifty dolphins in the ocean below. Simply a beautiful morning!

Why are Common Cranes so rare in the UK?

Wikipedia has some 'info': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranes_in_Britain (I get nervous using info and Wikipedia in the same sentence :))

Ages ago, BINAC was quite determined to take the p**s out of Bill Smith, whom he/she/they referred to as Mr Guppy. See here.

Is the South Australian Drought Breaking?

This from the Sydney Morning Herald today doesn't sound too good... (but of course I'm trying to remain positive, and the above gives hope)

    Oldest known Whooping Crane ....

Some news regarding the currently oldest known Whooping Crane from a week ago from Operation Migration (scroll down to February 8, Entry 1): "There is no evidence of any Whooping crane mortality having occurred this winter. However, the tour boat captains have reported seeing the Lobstick male...

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'In memory of the Birds that lost their lives in Florida, sadly this was one'

I love your Whooper pictures! But, I am somewhat confused. All the birds that died last year were reared by costumed humans, not adult Whooping Cranes. Is this one of the two wild chicks born at the Necedah NWR in 2006, only one of which survived to migration, but is still very much alive...

Malta in April - part II

Well done on emailing the government! It's getting to a point where I feel physically ill reading reports coming from Malta, but I read anyway. I think it's important for the topic to have a constant presence here, so thanks for helping with that.

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

I see your point and agree to some extent, but I would be wary of giving away exact locations, especially at this time of year. A long time ago (somewhere between posts 2000 and 5000, maybe, in this virtual swamp) a new member was after the location of one sighting, but when asked why he/she...

    Latest News from Malta

Of course not; as harrowing a task, no doubt, as it is a read. But, I firmly believe that because of actions taken by people such as you, change will come. Not soon enough for this year's victims (including a Kestrel ringed in my homeland) but it will come. I have no doubt each new post or...

    Latest News from Malta

Thanks for the update. It's simply incomprehensible that anyone would shoot a House Martin or a Swallow. Or a bird of prey for that matter. Even if the police don't catch the bastards (and that's putting it kindly), at least they would distract the 'hunters', even if only momentarily. It's good...

    The Killing Fields of Malta

Thanks Ann, as always, for posting this. Dean, I think you might be onto something. Very public and very visible shaming... The past three years and the recent demonstrations have shown that there is a minority on Malta that views the killing as their divine right. There are enough gruesome...

Here: http://www.nature.org/ivorybill/news/news2026.html Only an Arkansas find is eligible, though, which I didn't realise when I told the seller about the reward. Malta Defies EU on Spring Hunting Issue

Thanks Ann, For keeping everyone up-to-date on this, on this thread and the other. The 'hunting' seems to have no other purpose than the shooting itself, and no justification for it exists. I'm loath to label a minority from another country or culture barbaric, but in this case it's very...
