    Aussie Local patch

My local patch is beginning to get very cold and winterish now. The Lyrebirds are more active and are ripping the garden up searching for worms and grubs, if only I could train them to dig up weeds instead of my most precious small shrubs! But I really can't complain because I chose to live here...

Hello All, I was a member of this Forum some years ago but have not posted for a few years. I may well be doubling up on membership because I never 'unsubscribed' . Have forgotten my password and all that, but at that time I was 'Nancy' without the 06. Anyway it's nice to be back and I look...

    Any news of White Storks?

I read on a local birding site of the rare occurance of a pair of White Storks in W. Yorkshire making attempts at nest building. The article from the Telegraph on 22/04/04 stated that if successful this would be the first record of breeding White Storks in England since 1416. Is this true? Are...

A 'Multitude" of Oriental Pratincoles in NW Australia

Over 2.5 million birds in one place at one time is more than I can imagine, but this is the estimate of huge flocks of Oriental Pratincoles found recently in the Anna Plains area of Nothern WA. Read all about it and see pics at http://tasweb.com.au/awsg/whatsnew.htm I've just edited the above...

    From my Patio

Most evenings when the weather is suitable, Jim and I eat our evening meal outside on the stone patio. It’s usually a very casual meal cooked quickly on the BBQ with a salad and a bottle of very-cheap-but-good Australian wine (probably Jacobs Creek) to accompany it. In fact we eat most of out...

    Sore Elbows!

Question 1. Does anybody else get sore elbows from leaning them on the desk as you peruse Bird Forum and other facinating sites on your computer? Question 2. Has anybody estiminated the number of hours that have been 'used unproductively' (I wouldn'd say wasted) while under the guise of...

    Happy New Year

I'd like to wish all at Bird Forum a very happy, healthy, PEACEFUL New Year especially all the moderators and others who work so hard to keep this great site going so smoothly. I have given my local King Parrots and Crimson Rosellas an extra feed today because it is New Years Day. The Kingy was...

Your Worst Birding Day of the Year

I had the most awful birding day of MY LIFE last month, it has taken me all this time to get over it. I'm lucky enough to live on a large forested property way out in the Australian bush where lots of lovely birds allow me to share their home with them. The Sooty Owl (Tyto tenebricosa) is a...

Camping Trip to North Stradbroke Island, Queensland 26,27,28th July 2003 North Stradbroke Island is a magnificent sand island right on Brisbane’s doorstep. Composed almost entirely of sand it was created by the wind and waves piling up sand over thousands of years behind the rocky outcrop of...

    Unusual behaviour byPeregrine Falcon

I came across the following article in another birding site and thought it might be of interest to UK birders; ""I was given recently an interesting article from the Tasmanian {southernmost island state of Australia} newspaper "The Examiner" (Wed, 18th December 2002) and the story was further...

    Corvids and Golf Balls

We have a thread going here in Australia about Ravens stealing Golf Balls and dropping them from considerable heights onto roads or peoples heads. Other Corvids, such as Torresian Crow and other crows, have been accused of doing the same thing. They do not discriminate between colours taking...

    Female UK Birders????

I have noticed that there are very few female birders posting messages from the UK. Maybe they are all hiding behind male sounding names . Just curious about why that should be so. Or is it not a common practice for females to be active birdowatchers in UK?? I am not including 'Nina' in...

    Feeding Wild Birds??

Through reading the messages on the Forum since I became a member a few weeks ago I am struck by the number of references to feeding wild birds on a regular basis all year round. There have been several mentions from both UK, USA and Canada indicating that it is a normal thing to put feed out...

Good Morning and Hello from Byron Bay, Australia

It is a wet and warm morning here at Byron Bay and the outlook is a bit grey over the Pacific Ocean. No White-bellied Sea Eagles in view, not even a Brahminy Kite. Hope to enjoy the Forum but will be a 'quiet observer' unless something really exciting happens.;)
