    Possible hybrid gull, Dublin, 23/11/2013.

Thanks for that, Lou! It looked distinctly odd compared to the other gulls, so I thought it worth a look.

    And another photo...

    Possible hybrid gull, Dublin, 23/11/2013.

Evening all, I was wondering if this is a possible Herring x Lesser Black-backed Gull, taken in Dublin on 23/11/2013. Main points for me are the mid-grey mantle (almost exactly mid-range between the Herrings and the one LBB present) combined with the pink legs and the single mirror on p10. The...

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

Thanks! The kids are ill and wanted me to make them something, so as I was making some small flag patches at the time, they got patches of some of their favourite birds. They're only small at about 1 1/2 by 1 inch, but that sort of thing keeps them happy.

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

Thanks, Oivind! Finally got round to finishing the Waxwings and also managed another drawing this evening.

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

Thanks! Slowly working on a set of Waxwings. Even a vague chance I might finish it later today.

    Wootton Art 2013

I feel faint now all the blood's run down the other end. I do miss the birds, though. I mean small and brown is all very nice, but I'd rather have a handful of Silvereyes in the garden.

    Pallas's Warbler, Moor Green Lake

Lovely! As one of the first few people to mis-identify it, it's nice to see a few shots that rub it in...

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

Crikey. Finally got a house and moved our stuff in, unpacked and slowly settled in, so back to drawing... The first one is for yet another Tales From The Track - this time about IDing corellas in WA. I tried to scan the original (this being a mobile phone photo) at work and left it in the...

The wader pair is my favourite there.

    Steve's paintings

Love the Great Horned Owl. I saw one before I was into birding when working on Camp Spoilt Weasel in PA years back. We thought it was one of those giant plastic roof owls until it took off...

    One Year On

I like the elephants especially. Always nice to see a bit of pencil.

    New field studies

I rather like these big cat drawings. Very fluid.

    Wootton Art 2013

I like the sense of depth with the shading on the Redshank. The interpretative board picture is wonderful as well.

    Hello!

Nice! I can see several lifers on there that I wouldn't mind...

    Missy's thread

Great work and always good to see another pencileer* on the board. * I made that up and I'm sticking with it...

    My netsuke

Lovely work there! And to think I was feeling pleased with myself for having just carved a rough spoon out of birch...

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

Thanks! Thought I'd do something a little different with the plovers than my usual single-bird-per-picture thing.

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

I've been offline for a while as we've movd house from Australia to the UK and we're still sorting out somewhere to live and getting the new position underway, so not much time to have caught up on what everyone else has been doing. I've finally had the chance to get to a scanner, so here's a...

Eurasian Wren - can we do better?

Resulting in the split Troglodytes flatulenta?

Eurasian Wren - can we do better?

    I'll agree with that!

Eurasian Wren - can we do better?

But was it named in English...? Also, I rather think groups predating the Chinese and Egyptians would probably have named birds first - we'll have to get some paleo-etymologists to try to reconstruct those names. Some nice points raised on here: can we ever have gender-neutral bird names and...
