    Possible hybrid gull, Dublin, 23/11/2013.

Evening all, I was wondering if this is a possible Herring x Lesser Black-backed Gull, taken in Dublin on 23/11/2013. Main points for me are the mid-grey mantle (almost exactly mid-range between the Herrings and the one LBB present) combined with the pink legs and the single mirror on p10. The...

Eurasian Wren - can we do better?

Having loosely followed the splitting and renaming of Troglodytes troglodytes, I wondered if there was a better modifier than 'Eurasian'? While there's nothing wrong with the term, it seems a shame to use something so utilitarian on a wren. Looking into it a little, I've seen a couple of vague...

    Stumped by a raptor, Singapore

Evening all, Saw this raptor this morning on the coast in Singapore. It was larger than a Common Buzzard (which I've also seen this morning - apparently uncommon here). I've gone through the list of raptors in Singapore and the region in general in Robson's Bird's of South-east Asia and...

    Hare in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh

Saw this rather small hare on the heath in Holyrood Park the other day. It was a little larger than the nearby rabbit, but the muzzle, coat and face aren't right for rabbit and it's not lanky enough for a Brown Hare (at least in my rather limited experience). I reckon it's a Mountain Hare, but...

Colour pencils - what's your favourite?

I know there was an older thread here, but though it worth getting a few more opinions as time's passed since then. I'm using a real mish-mash of pencil types based on a) what's available and b) what effect I'm looking for. I'm torn on which are my current favourites: either Caran D'Ache...

    Best bird guides by region...Europe

I've seen lots of threads from people new to birding, or going on holiday somewhere unfamiliar, who ask what's the best field guide for such-and-such a place. I wondered if the denizens of the books department here would mind helping to create a list of the best field guides for different...

Colonel Boris' Apocalyptic* 2012 list (*actual amount of apocalypse may vary)

This year, I'm trying for 300 Australian birds without my own transport. An excellent trip to Cairns provided a massive boost to the list, but living in the wasteland that is Adelaide, it's going to be hard work... 001) Australian Magpie Gymnorhina tibicen, Parkside, SA, 01/01/2012 002)...

    Colonel Boris' scruffy old sketchpad.

As ever, the time I get for sketching seems to be diminishing each year but every now and again I get a good reason to give it a go. I did a couple of drawings for friends recently, which I've not had the time to post until now. I don't get much time to post on BF any more, either, but I still...

    Australian Crow/Raven lumping...?

Just the front page of an article in advance of print, but I'm not thrilled to have to take a few birds off of my list...

    Low light and no flash

Hi all, To start off, I've got a Sony Alpha 230 with 18-55 mm and 80-300 mm kit lenses, with access to a 55-200 mm lens. The problem I have is that I'm going to do a bit of photography for Opus of some extinct birds in our university's museum, but the light is very dim and I can't use flash...

Australian field guides - a bit of a review.

Australian Field Guides There have been a few threads asking about Australian field guides from time to time and I’ve managed to get enough of them to do a bit of a comparison. Bearing in mind these are my opinions, hopefully it will be useful to anyone who’s looking to buy a guide before...

Hybrid Mallard x Pacific Black Duck? (Sydney)

Saw this fellow in the park and noticed it stood out from the Pacific Black Ducks. Looked slightly darker, has orange feet (instead of grey), more Mallard-type bill colouring, orange face (instead of buff) and a more speckled breast. Any ideas? Gheers, Tony

Two Little Brown Jobs, Hornsby (nr Sydney)

Saw these two out and about in the bush today. The first (pitures in ths post) has me stumped completely, but I reckon the second (the following post) being a thornbill of sorts. I wasn't sure about a Brown Thornbill as the eye and leg colours seem wrong and there is a lot of streaking all the...

    Possibe Mallard hybrid? (Sydney)

Evenin' all, I saw this fellow on the lake in the Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney and thought he looked a bit odd, even for a yuck duck. No curly tail, somewhat odd head shape, rather straight top side to the bill. Any ideas, or just a odd-looking farmyarder?

    Australian Raven? (Sydney)

This fellow's caught me a bit - the eye is brown for a start, which would imply a juvenile, but the beak is long and the feathers look well worn. Also, the throat hackles are either very neat and flat, or missing. Still an Australian Raven, or something else? Cheers, Tony

    Sandpiper/stinty-thing, Sydney.

Found a wader at the waterbird refuge in Bicentennial / Olympic Park and it's thrown me quite a bit. Unfortunately, it didn't hang around long enough for me to even attempt digiscoping it (just as well as I'd forgotten my camera for that bit), but I did get some notes. I've attached them , but...

Hong Kong Airport ID needed (please!)

During a very brief stop-over in Hong Kong (before re-embarking on the thrombosis-inducing flight to Sydney), I managed to see a whole single bird species at the airport. No pictures, I'm afraid, partially because I didn't fancy being beaten half-to-death by airport security and partially as...

    Sydney Birding Diary

Never a bad day when you bag fifteen lifers before coffee break. Even better when more than half stay still long enough for a photo. I went for a walk around the uni campus before breakfast and, oddly enough, the first three birds I saw were introduced species: Common Starling, Common Myna and...

    Hong Kong Airport...?

Evenin' all, I've got a two-hour stop at Hong Kong Airport - is there anything that I'm likely to see at all in that time from the airport building? I'm already tight for space for luggage and I didn't fancy adding a Hong Kong bird guide for such a short time, so any ideas welcome! Cheers, Tony
