    Monocular - 8x20 or 5x15?

Hi all, If you could only choose one, and cost wasn't an issue, would you choose the Monovid 8x20 or the Nikon 5x15 HG? I have a little pair of Trinovid 8x20s which I like for travelling and non-birding days out, but (obviously) they always seem a bit 'meh' when you're used to using 8x42. For...

    Exposure issue with Fuji X100

Thanks Paul! That never occurred to me at all. It does sound plausible in terms of the effect that's produced, but I agree it's strange that it should only happen when the camera is pressed against the scope. I normally set up the scope for digiscoping with the eyecup extended all the way out...

    Common Snipe bouncing...

Hi all, "Look! Jack Snipe! See it bouncing??"... is a common shout in the hides I visit. And my Collins guide describes the bouncing behaviour as 'unique' to the Jack Snipe. But here's a Common Snipe (Fowlmere, UK) doing the same thing: https://youtu.be/XRMmL5O3uRo Apologies for the quality...

    Exposure issue with Fuji X100

HI all, I'd be very grateful for advice from anyone who's using a Fuji X-series camera, or who might have seen the same issue that I'm finding just now. I have my X100 set to Aperture Priority Auto, and everything works as I would expect while I'm using maximum aperture (f2). But when I change...

    8X42 Slc hd

This winter I felt an urge to buy a 7x42 binocular to complement my long-time favourite (Nikon 8x32 SE). With time to kill, and cost not a factor, I went into Cley Spy one day to look at a Leica Ultravid HD+. While I was there, the very helpful staff member put a couple of Zeiss models, Nikons...

    UK, Titchwell, January

Hmm.. I'm sure they were bigger than knot, and there was another chap there taking photos of the other identical bird, who was equally stumped - neither of us could accept that it was a knot! I agree that anything else seems unlikely, but still... Thanks though!

    UK, Titchwell, January

Can anyone help with this? It was about the size of a ruff - bigger than a knot I'm sure, and there were two of them with identical eye stripes. Taken last week in Titchwell. Thank you!

    The Future SV

Beg to differ! Batteries are a potential source of acid leaking into your binoculars; batteries are attached to electronics and moving parts that add significant bulk and weight, and which frequently fail; batteries go flat; batteries will probably shorten the life of your binoculars, and reduce...

Dartford warbler, iPhone & Phoneskope adapter

iPhone 6+ & Phoneskope adapter, on a Swarovski ATX-85 scope. I still need to get the hang of manual exposure control, but this is good enough for me to not bother carrying the 'proper' camera around with me... Dartford Warbler, Dunwich Heath, Suffolk, England Regards, Al

    Quick question re SLC 8x30

Thanks both. Saw a dusty-but-otherwise-clean version for sale in the auction site, described as SLC Neu, but showing the WB badge. Was tempted, but price, reviews and the focus-wheel position eventually put me off. A close shave though - my finger was hovering over the 'bid' button right up...

    Quick question re SLC 8x30

Did the SLC 8x30 Neu retail the label "8x30 WB" on the bridge? How would one distinguish the Neu model from the previous? Thanks, Al

UK - CL Companion Africa Edition bargain...

Hi all, If you've been tempted by the special 'Africa' edition of the Cl Companion, Selfridge.com have both the 8x30 and 10x30 models for sale at £749 - cheaper than most shops are selling the normal editions. In fact the 10x30 model is cheaper than their OWN price for the normal edition...

I saw this advert, and I confess I quite like the style. REALLY like it in fact! But not to the extent that I'd pay the huge additional price.

    ATX95 Focussing wheel

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that this problem (which I'm starting to experience with my 85 too) is caused simply by friction between the focus ring and the zoom ring. As soon as I can find some, I'll try a small smear of vaseline around the two inside edges and see if that helps.

    Do you ignore Leica ?

A drop onto a carpet could cause that, easily, without any visible evidence of a bump. Regarding the original question, I've also heard many retailers saying that they can't shift Leica now - some because the competition is too stiff; some because the after-sales service is terrible compared to...

    EL 8.5X42 dilemma

Just this weekend I tested the SV 8.5x42 and the SV 8x32 against Ultravid HD, Zeiss HT, Zeiss SF, and a couple of SLC thrown in for good measure. To my eye, the used SLC 8x42 HD was BY FAR the best of the bunch! Comparing directly to the newer Swarovskis, my thoughts were as follows: 1) The...

SO wanted to like the EL...

So. A guy walks into a shop and says: “I want the best binoculars in the world – don’t worry about the cost! What have you got?”. The very helpful shopkeeper asked all the right questions and then set out on the table beside the patio: - Swarovision 8.5x42 - Swarovision 8x32 - Ultravid HD 7x42...
