    2019 UK Orchids

I assume you didn't see the leaves Steve? Not a lot to go on, it just looks like a funny Violet. Whether it is outside the bounds of Violet I'll leave you to judge. Personally, I doubt it's a F1 hybrid, in my experience they don't really look like either parent. It might be a back-cross with...

    2019 UK Orchids

A close up of the flower to get a better idea of the colour of the interior of the hypochile (I can see it looks dark but is that red, brown or olive), a view of the leaves to see their shape and colour, and the base of the stem to see what colour it is. Rich

The wide apart, angled pollinia make this a Greater Butterfly rather than a Lesser.

All Southern Marsh. Flowering time can be variable, even between colonies that are not far apart. I monitor a number of colonies in NE Somerset, some started to flower in early May, others just starting this week. Your large hybrids will be x grandis (CSO x SMO). Can you PM me the site...

Being a predominantly eastern species I suspect there are no reliable Man orchid sites close to Bristol. Your best bet is that well known one in Worcs, Ufton Fields I think it's called. Rich M

    2018 Orchid Thread

I don't use Facebook for anything else, I set up an account, under a pseudonym, purely to participate in the closed orchid groups. There really is a lot of good stuff on there, with lots of people actively participating. Plenty of orchid information also on Twitter which you can read without...

I suspect most people now use the Native Orchids of Britain and Ireland group on Facebook - plenty of activity on there. There are also separate active groups for Kent and for Sussex Rich M

    British Birds digital edition

Anybody on here with a digital subscription to BB who can get the Pocketmags app to work correctly, ie correctly show the extra content, on a Windows 10 PC? I can read the digital copy fine when I view via the website but when I download a copy to the app most of the extra content doesn't work...

    2017 UK orchids

I suspect that on the plant on the left the sepals are more widely spread than in the plant on the right. Also the 3 tepals that form the hood look to be longer on the left hand plant. Rich M

    Birdguides new system

But much of the content is taken from other sites, Twitter etc, without any validity check. Birdguides load all their records onto BirdTrack, which becomes available to local county recorders etc. Unfortunately the recorders have no way to trace the records back to a source in order to get any...

    2017 UK orchids

Back cross helleborine This plant is thought to be possibly a back cross of E. x schulzei with E. purpurata. When it is growing it looks very much like a Violet, although it flowers slightly earlier than the other Violets at the site, but the flowers are atypical for a Violet. Rich M

    Bug ID help wanted

Can anyone give me an ID pointer on this insect on a helleborine flower? Thanks Rich M

    2017 UK orchids

Yes, Broad-leaved helleborine. Dark Red has narrower, more folded leaves clusted together at the base and frilly bosses on the lip. Flower colour is unusual for Broad-leaved though so I can see why you might plump for Dark Red. Rich
